My ride is missing the cooling tin underneath the 3rd and 4th cylinder.
is it possible they did this on purpose to keep the two hottest ones cooler?

Doesn't sound right to me. Tin would make them cooler by keeping out the hot exhaust gases.

what the underneath tins are designed to do is to create some back pressure in the cooling air stream, which makes the fan more efficient. all the tin is supposed to be there, none of it is "optional".

that's a good point and I concur whole-heartedly. Tin is there for a purpose and leaving it off compromises your cooling efficiency. All air cooled engines need this under side tin to keep the cylinders from baking as this engine runs very hot already.

Tin is there for a purpose, all of it, replace it or fear overheating!
