the "new" earliest known M-code plate is vin number 399686
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=166383
the entire plate reads:
13 10 8
360 175
U4 211 GREY 399686

the highest known non M-code plate is 397653

so if anyone has a bus between the numbers:
397653
and
399686
please post whether it has an M-code plate so we can narrow this down even further. right now the gap is less than 3000 buses. if the bus has an M-code plate, please post all the info off of the plate so we can get the manufacture date also.

I would like to know if anyone has a lower M-code plate.

also, does anyone have a pre-M-code plate bus that is close to that chassis number (within a couple thousand)

the more information we get, the closer we can narrow down when exactly the first M-code plate showed up.

My Sept '58 (I think it was September 28?) SC is 394401 and was pre M-Code plate.

the flip side of the lowest VIN on an M-code plate is the highest VIN of a bus that never had a M-code plate.

My first splitty had no M-code plate. It was a '59 with VIN 453 475. I still have the title to it. It had no plate behind the seat, but had a body number stamped in.
This doesn't help you find the earliest M-coded bus, but that '59 may well be the newest body numbered bus.

If anyone finds that old '59, please let me know. Smile Last I heard it was in Maryland.
