|
|
Hello, I have a stock 1966 Deluxe Bus. Is there any reasonable solution to finding a front disc brake system without having to pay 300.00 shipping from Germany, wait for development of a system and paying to be on the waiting list, or make radical changes like replacing a perfectly good beam or changing all the wheels to 15" and buying all new tires for the new wheels? Plus lowering which I really am not interested in. It was so easy on my bug, just buy Ghia components and change them. If you have front disc brakes, what are they and how did you do it?
Thanks,

Check out Nates site. He's now doing a spindle for use w/late bus disc brakes. Seems like a good option using mostly all "stock" parts.

Why not, bay are on 14's! When you go with a bay setup, i think you must use bay wheels. |

What I meant is using a stock Bay setup, as I did, stock 14 inch Split wheel (with adapters) will not go over the calibers. 14 inch bay rims will.
Like mentioed above CSp has a kit to clear 14 split wheels _________________ Dave Brooks

Ahh better now... Did you look at the Porsche 944 set-up. Is it possible to run your 14's with this set-up. I think ronnie sell this kit |

Thanks for all the input, very helpful in my search for front discs brakes. I think I will go with the CSP, Custom Speed Parts, P/N 499-264-5205-14 kit. This way I can keep the 14" wheels I already have and make no modifications except the brakes themselves.
thanks again _________________ It is never too late to have a happy childhood! |

I'm also planning a front disc conversion at some point in the future. From the CSP Webpage:

CSP Front Disc Brake Kit 5/205, T2 55-70
Now you can keep your original 14 or 15 steel wheels on the bus while upgrading the front to discs brakes. With the existing CSP front disc brake system, this was not possible. With this all new constructed disc brake system these wheels can now be used.
The new kit can also be used with 15 Alloy wheels, as per the existing kit. If you intend to swap between alloy wheels and steel wheels, this is the kit for you.
The principle of the kits remain exactly the same. The kit features an alloy hub with a bolt on disc rotor. The high grade aluminium calliper bracket is bolted to the original spindle. There are no modifications necessary to install this kit. Only the master cylinder needs to be changed to a disc brake type as usual. |
What master cylinder swap are they talking about, and what would fit a 67? _________________ ITMC - Backyard chapter

Yes, positively they will NOT clear 14" bus wheels! EMPI's are 15" and have a different offset. That "new" kit seems to fit the bill though. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I got the 14" CSP setup from William at CSP USA. Awesome quality, easy install.
I also did the MC switch in my '67. Very easy to do. You need the bay window disk brake MC ('71 I think) and a spacer kit (and save your reservoir, it fits perfect). You may also want to get new rubber grommets where the reservoir attaches to the MC....mine were dry and a bit crusty. I didn't have to adjust the plunger or anything, it mated up perfectly. Might as well replace some of the brake lines if needed too.
Running these mated up to drop spindles as well.

Nice & clean set up!
Q. Did you have to also install the "proportional/check valve" on the rear brake line as the fatchicks have? _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Where is the check valve? I don't remember seeing one on my 70.
Has anyone ever tried to use the vacuum assist master cylinder found on later bays on a drum brake setup? I could have sworn that I saw a vac assist master cylinder upgrade from the factory in a book at some point.. |

Beautiful installation!
I noticed CSP has cross drilled discs for 57.00 more for the kit. Is it worth it? _________________ It is never too late to have a happy childhood! |

there would not be one on your 70 since it doesnt have disc brakes. _________________ flossin, tossin, dippin, and trippin |
