so we have the 1600sp down in the basement and we've been dickin around for a while and its almost ready. one thing is we need new engine tin on the 1&2 cylinder, easy! but i've noticed that the belt on the alt isn't moving right and is turning when it get to the alt only in certain times. this also seems to be making the whole fan shroud lean forward and stuff to, almost like the belt is too small and making it lean. here's some pics, any help!

screwed up belt???

first of all, get a new continental belt. 9.5 x 905. get rid of that (what appears to be) cheesy NAPA belt which is probably not the right size anyway.
you don't have an alternator, you have a generator. is it a 30amp or a 38amp? it will be stamped in the generator body. if you have a 38amp, you need other backing plates or your alignment will always be off.
it looks like you don't have any shims between the pulley halves. have you tried adjusting that?
clean the rust and crap out of your pulleys, where the belt rides. you're gonna chew up belts super fast if they are as rusty as the look.
the tin in the last pic is almost comical. i know you said you need to replace it, but you were going to do that before you drove it, right??

Your belt is riding way too high, are there any shims in there?

you may not be missing any plate. what amperage is the generator?
after knowing that, the next step is to get a new, real belt.

They've got shims but it looks like they are all on the outside.

A few of those shims should be between the pulley halves.

New belt, shim it correctly, and if it is leaning, double check that the shroud is bolted down. Also as stated before clean that rust! It could be grabbing the belt and making it walk out of the pulley. Maybe check the pulley and make sure it is not bent either.

Here's my $0.25 Confused

Not reading any of your questions and just looking at the pictures I see a motor that absolutely needs to be totally taken apart, cleaned up, inspected for excesive wear, have any and all parts replaced as needed, and put back together with brand new tin. And yes a new belt! Rolling Eyes

In other words, from just the looks of that motor, the belt should be the very least of your worries! Good luck! Cool
