My take on it. First I tried the same style folding cup holder with the hinged arms. Those didn't work well because the base was angled too low and the arms wanted to un-hinge with heavier/taller beverages especially under heavy acceleration . Then I bought the ring style folding cup holders you see here. Not only did it solve the opening arm issue, but when unfolded the base was more level to the floor. The only thing I had to modify was... enlarging the ring slightly with a dremel tool so my 16oz Hydroflask mugs would fit. Took about 10 min on each ring. I also put black non-slip shelf liner on the bases of each cup holder using Elmer's spray adhesive. This quiets any rattling that can occur with metal containers. Best part... the cup holders are mounted using only VHB tape. No holes. Cheers!

Jerry, where did you get these cup holders???

FWIW...Slightly modded $14 GW console has been good for us the past 8 years;
also handy for van maintenance journal, tire gauge, pen/pencil, mints, etc...

We’ve been using these for several years, and they’re still our favorite. I opted to mount my them on the side of the passenger seat base, near the floor in the walk-though passageway between the front seats. This puts them within easy reach for both passengers, yet they fold up and out of the way when not being used.

These are my favorite. I like that configuration for either a full camper or a weekender. Different mods, of course. Some are different views of the same:

I went this route. A towel holder, a few drilled holes, some super glue, and two bicycle mounted cup holders. Works really, really well. Used some spare hose, some electrical tape, and 2 pieces of sandpaper to make the smaller rod work with the larger clamps on the cup holders.

This is very good - I used to have a ham radio mounted just under the stock one, and the homemade rack for it can be used to steady your hand whilst tuning the upper knobs. Itsa big problem when going thru the woop-de-doo's and trying to dial in.
Outstanding feature!

Buy the adjustable arm one....and convert them to full circle with a short piece if PVC, easily changeable _________________ .ssS! |

No space for the console and Grover.
We need alternate cup holders now.

Dave, nah, forget those cut holders, Grover should hold the drinks for you now! You could easily do a mod on this. _________________ -- PF

The things I would never have thought of.....
If I use fuel or vacuum line it's even black! |
I envision Abscate's suggestion as a ring of ~3" dia. PVC pipe, perhaps slightly taller than the arms...???
Our 97 Taurus had this back in the day...sized down the large cupholder to snugly fit a standard soda can.
Your idea was maybe linking the ends of the adjustable arms with a short length of hose...??? Either way...
<shrug> Git 'r done!

Dave,
As I have been considering where to put holders, my primary concern has been regarding what kind of air-flow directs toward the cup tops. The ones mounted to the auto-shift cover [Downtown Brown's photo above] are really interesting until something (gross, like mouse house bits) comes out of the air vent right there in the heater cover in front of that shifter. Check out the slots that go horizontally at the 'seam' in the cover there... Even with a clean heater blower housing, you could still get gnats, and other parts of bugs, etc floating in your coffee. Even with the 10C front air inlet conversion using internal/recirc, you'd still be looking at dust from under the dash getting pulled into the heater box, then into your drink. [Until Vanistan makes a tidy and tiny little furnace filter holder for the recirc intake, anyway] _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch

I copied "Chase4food"'s kayak bar cup holder design.
(link: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=20)
Probably a bit hard to see in the picture below
It's worked well for holding my cellphone and coffee. I've tried putting larger bottles in it and they are too top heavy for the cup holders.
This has worked....I just wish I could find wing nuts for the T bolts (that dont interfere with the housing) for the nuts I am currently using always come loose every 3rd day (I dont want nylock nuts because I like the ability to adjust the location on the fly). _________________ '89 2WD Westy "Grey Goose" - Manual 4spd

I ordered two of the Atwood cup holders.
As far as "gunk" in my drinks blowing out of the heater?
I don't have mice or mouse residue in there, the ENTIRE system has been removed, cleaned, rebuilt and bleached. Even the ducts to the dash outlets.
EVERY opening on the Vans body known to Vanagondom has been sealed or protected to prevent mouse entry, even the newly discovered automatic shift lever opening.
I hates mices!!!!
As far as bugs or dust? No worries...... I'm an outdoor worker, have been for decades, I've sucked in more dust, pollen and bugs than the average man. Bugs, saw dust and dirt on lunches, bees in soda cans. Protein I call it!
Heck, just last weekend my Golden had a sopping drool covered tennis ball he dropped in my coffee mug! ..... yeah...... I removed it and drank it.....
Interesting story from my MD Sister In Law. Back in the early 1900's polio was a MAJOR childhood health crises. Interestingly, mainly among the wealthy.
It has since been discovered that the dirt found on the poorer, less bathed children actually harbored a natural antibody to Polio!
Cleanliness wasn't at all next to Godliness..... it brought susceptibility to Polio.
Also I've backpacked a lot, A bug, a fleck of dirt, really doesn't faze me at all.
Now snakes? Think Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones .... Raiders of the lost Ark type fear of snakes.
