South Dakota speed limit was posted 80 mph. I'll admit that my "cruise control" was just my foot laying on the throttle full blast. Downhill it got a bit faster, uphill perhaps down to 70... Anyway, averaged 15 mpg across SD. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Year -- 1983.5
model -- Westy
engine -- Inline 4 from a Jetta
trans --- stick
mods -- use premium gas
tires -- Hankook RAO9's
Getting 24 mpg and pretty happy with that after engine troubles resolved. |

That's awesome! What/which engine or combo? VW had 1.8 and 2.0. cis-e, digifant or motronic management and counter flow or cross flow head?
What RPMs do you cruise at? What size are your tires? |

I have the 1.8 head and 2.0 engine block to fit under the lid. I believe it's the digifant fuel system.
Main thing for me was to find a VW "engine whisperer" who could really tune it and dial in the timing.
I have the guys at District Line auto in Silver Spring MD to thank for that. |

I'll post this here as it relates to mileage as much as anything...
This document looks at, among other things, how much horsepower it take to overcome drag at various speeds. In particular the table near the bottom of the page sums it up:
http://phors.locost7.info/phors06.htm
They say 'speed kills' -- wellsir, it definitely kills your mileage. I can imagine that our aerodynamically challenged vans are the worst case scenario for presenting drag at speed and suspect that driving habits (especially cruising speed) and headwinds play a huge part in the results we see. |

On our recent trip to Yosemite (High Country...due to crowds I will henceforth avoid the Valley in the summer) we got 19 mpg (2.0 tiico conversion). That includes a lot of hill climbing. On the highway I would go 60 mph (3500rpm...seems like the van's happy place). If there was traffic I would go 65mph. Seems a lot louder. I feed the tiico 91 octane. |

we just completed 6,8oo miles from NY to Yellowstone to grand canyon back home in a 2week stint.
many days were 2 fill up days..
avg was right at 20mpg..
with my
1999 passat 150hp AEB 1.8t on an aircooled DK transmission and 205/65/15 tires.
cruising what the road and van told me was good.. so 63-75mph.. but I get a front end shake over 73mph..
used premium when at altitudes over 6,oooft.
headwinds(sidewinds) in Montana were pretty brutal. _________________

it'll be interesting to see the mpg now, Dave!
if you're cruising thru northern MN on the way back, you can have a yard to park in and shop privileges!

1986 Vanagon westfalia
Trans.
4 speed.
12% oversize 3rd-4th
10% override ring/pinion (I might have those backwards)
Limited slip.
Motor.
2003 TDI
Bigger injectors (can't remember the size)
Eliminated the EGR
Straight pipe
Stock computer.
Tires
215/60r16 Michelin defenders
Mileage is based on 3-5000km road trips through British Columbia and Alberta. Van is fully loaded with camping gear, two people and two dogs.
The best I've seen was between Canmore Alberta and Cranbrook BC
6.25L/100km
Worst was 9.25L/100km between Vancouver and Kamloops BC.
Average mileage on these trips doing 100+-km/h is around 7.25 L/100km
Average city only mileage seems to sit around 8.25L/100km _________________ 04 Ram w/ trailer hitch for haulin the VWs home

you really won't see anything better than 17~18mpg with an automatic and stock engine.
too much of the transmissions power is turned into heat. _________________

1990 Tin Top 2wd
reworked 2.1 wbx
4 spd
225/60r16 tires
Flat terrain with a few over passes
Absolutely magnificent weather
Mix of state highways, country roads, small town slow downs and big city hustle.
195 miles from through and around New Bern, NC to Norfolk, VA
25-65 mph with windows wide open and 300 pounds of gear and dog.
Used just under 7.5 gallons of 90 octane E0 gasoline.
Works out to about 26 mpg.
The van typically runs pretty well, but I believe the E0 fuel makes a big difference.
I wish I could buy E0 locally. _________________ 1990 GL Tin Top 2.1WBX / 4 speed |

On two separate but recent trips from Santa Cruz CA to Pinecrest Lake up hwy108 (on the way to Sonora Pass), we got 18.5 or so on the way up, and 20.5 on the way back. That makes sense because we're starting at sea level and going to about 6000' and back. I wasn't shy about using the gas pedal, cruising at the speed limit and then some, often 70 or 75.
I got 20 or so on a trip to Oregon and back for the eclipse. There were elevation changes there too, but it was a much longer trip, and on the way back some of it was uber-slow due to traffic.
I think the best I've seen is around 22 or so, after a one-way stretch of highway driving. Very short trips around town it's more like 16 or 17.
It's a 1990 multivan with 1.8T and auto trans (3.27), full of camping gear and two people (only one person to Oregon). Tire diameter is very slightly larger than stock, and the speedometer is very accurate as confirmed via GPS ("Speed" app on iOS). I assume that means the odometer is accurate too, but I haven't thought to check that seperately.
