What exactly is a windshield protector?
I keep seeing them in the classifieds and don't know what they do?
I'm assumming it protects the window when folded down.
Excuse my ignorance.

The windshield protector is a vinyl impregnated canvas guard that ties to the edges of the windshield. Its purpose os to protect the windshield when it is folded down. It has edges that are about 8' wide it is three sides of a rectangle. It is one of the least favorite VW Thing accessories. I have a few of them that are like new. One of these days I plan to take my offroad Thing on some harsh roads wiht the protector in place and see what it does. I have one protector that has never been used. They are OD green. I have driven Things on fairly harsh roads witht he windshield won and no protector and have not broken a windshield (yet) But then both of my Ting windshields are somewhat the worse for wear. |

Were these things really designed to protect the windshield? I was always under the impression that they were intended to eliminate the possibility of windshield relfection giving away position on the battlefield. |

They do not cover the center of the glass in the windshield only the edges about 6" from the top adn sides of the windshield. There are headlight covers and mirror covers. I never thought of the glare reduction issue. This windshiled cover is one of the dumber VW Thing accessories. I donot think many folks actually use them. |

Ah...being one of those Thing owners who used one, I didn't know that they didn't cover the entire windshield. Makes sense now. |

Thanks,now I know.
I assumed that's what they were used for, but thought I would ask anyway.
