Bobinator: On a limited budget, I would spend your dough first on the things which, if not fixed, might kill you. Brakes? Does it have "May-Pop" brand tires? Does it go where you point it? Sounds like you can weld. A cage is a good thing. You have found the right place for good advice. Good luck on your project. Not a lot of 16 year old kids these days called "Bob".....

looks like a good starting point. i agree with driving it for a little bit, get used to it, learn how to drive a clutch, then you can change it when you pull your motor.. my buddy has that exact same body, pretty cool. i think there is a manx sight, those guys should be able to ID it.

Looks like money waiting to be spent! Have fun looks like a good project to start with. Spend some money on a cage before the engine just my 2 cents.

Bob...right on. Wish I had something like that when I was 16. Anyone ever hits you, it has to be their fault. No judge would ever buy the argument that someone couldn't see you....
Do searches on the different forums on this site for engine stuff, paint, parts, etc. Poke around a bit before you spend your dough. You might find some stuff cheap or free...for instance, I have a Kingpin Linkpin rebuild set I have advertised here on thesamba that I don't need. No bites on the ad. I'll send them to you for free if the shipping isn't too expensive from Seattle. Let me know.

Bruce Meyers, the creator.

The El-Lobo, Enos 500 and clones aren't very rare. They are however very cool! In street trim (lowered, big-n-littles), they make a sleek looking buggy.

so heres a cast 1641 kit. $129.99 and the forged one was 249.99 or something like that. how much better is the forged pistons than the cast ones. ill probably be building an all new high performance motor later on so this should do, right?

im gonna be taking out the motor possibly tonight. so all there is to it basically is putting a car jack under the oil plug portion of the motor. tagging the ignition wires and what not, removing the oil pressure line and fuel line (making sure to cap off the fuel line) and just undo the 4 bolts holding it to the transaxle ( removing the two bottome bolts first) and viola?

now another one, can a vw engine be lifted onto a bench with only 2 people?
DONT GET THE CAST KIT!! Get the forged there totally stronger and if you romp on those cast kits the crank will just fall apart

thanks UB, i bought a set of used S.T.U. desert traks that are mounted on a set of 15x10's that look just like those. they just don't match my front 5 spokes. Confused eventually i'll buy a set of centerlines for it, those steel wheels must weigh 300 lbs each Very Happy

Yes, VERY heavy. I had a set on my single seater that must have weighed 50 pounds a piece.

Came across your post by acident but it hit a note. I have owened just about every type of off road vehicle you can think of and to tell the truth the most FUN was a stock honda 90 3 wheeler. When you got out of a big bowl at Glamis you know you had done somthing that took skill. Here it is in a nutshell, It not the money you sink in a vehicle its how much of your self you put in it and this includes your driving, fabricating mechanicing skills. there is always some one out there that can throw more money at a project, be smart and throw brains.

Happy Trails

You're going to be running this in the desert? Don't ever consider the "slip in" 1641 kit, it's giving you bigger cylinders without bigger bores in the heads and case, and it does this by making the cylinder walls thinner. That means less cooling, which means overheating in a desert engine. I'd go one step up and get the 1776, which has the same thickness as a stock 1600.

As long as your motor runs, though, I'd focus on the other stuff that's critical first. Disc breaks, if you can afford them, would be a very worthwhile addition. A cage, good seats, and 4-point harnesses are a must.

Are you sure it tops out at 50? My stock '69 can handle that in 3rd, pushes 80 and upwards if it has to in 4th. And that's carrying a lot more of itself around than your little dune buggy has to. You sure you don't have some weird-ass gearing going on there?
