| Where is a list of dates of manufacture for 50's ghias? Like what month/year chassis # 1 123xxx was produced? |

123xxx was just an example. If you have the info I'll post the vins I'm curious about and start my own date list of my own cars. I just thought someone would have the data complied somewhere, the whole early build line by date.
Rockstock, the 58/59 list would be helpfull, if we could read it. At least that's half the early cars. |

its a clickable thumbnail - can you click on it, make it larger?
please note these dates are for beetle chassis
it has been quite rightly pointed out to me by a friend that ghias would have rolled out of karmann some time after these dates (4wks?), because vw supplied karmann with the chassis, then karmann had to build the car
i can (will) do a similar chart for the 56/7s. to follow

this would be Mar 56 wouldn't it?
were you thinking chassis 1 23x xxx?

Can somebody just resolve this confusion for a newbie like me, my chassis number is 1245136...when was it built and what year is it? I believe it's a 56..

Oops, yes:
1 123 xxx would be Mar 56 (roughly second/thrid week)
1 23x xxx would be July 56.

First week in August, 1956. It is a 1956 Karmann-Ghia. Really when dealing with Karmann-Ghias of the "Lowlight" era, there was no such thing as "Model Year" as the production detail evolution was much more on-going than as with the concurrent Beetle or Bus. And always remember, Karmann was (still is) an independent manufacturer--not a subsidiary of VW--and as such could get away with that lazier kind of progress, until the car proved such a success that standardizing production it over the span of a year was a must. Look for literature calling out Model Year for the Lowlight Ghias and you won't find any mention of it.
Also, In Germany through 1960 or so, all cars were registered as whatever year they were built in. So a December 1957 built Ghia was a 1957 Ghia, not a 1958.

lowlight.uk is full of great info, I'll be digging into that stuff for weeks sorting out these cars.
Soo... using hypothetical example 1 123xxx again and from what I'm getting here, there was a 1 123xxx ghia as well as a 1 123xxx beetle that rolled out of the factory in March of '56? Same number sequence for beetles and ghias?
