I saw this Westy today on the street. Not sure of the year, has had restoration attempted, interior not appearing to be original but actually looks pretty good, and finally I am not certain of the year (65/66?).

I would like to find the owner and speak with them for kicks, but would like to know more about the age/classification of the vehicle.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Looks to be an early 67 if the rear latch on the hatch is correct.

3 more pics of the Westy I found today...

Any idea what I should offer this guy should he want to sell? It has expired plates since July and has Michigan tags.

My fiancee likes it which says alot...

Not much, that is some scary rocker repair work. I would look underneath for further rust problems.

Thanks Everett...just trying to get as much up front advice as I can before I really check it out. These pics are taken in 'drive by' mode.

BTW...dont you ever go to sleep? I thought I was the only one crazy enough to spend 10+ hours per day on this site!

Regards,
Jack

I have been successful with the "leave a note under the wiper" technique before, and would like to know what 'ballpark $' I would be in with this Westy. The thought of it having MI tags is scary, but it is rare that the fiancee says that she likes it.

I would be willing to deal with rocker replacement which is obviously needed, but need advice from the pros.

Thanks again,
Jack

Did pimp my ride do those rockers?

The price depends on area. A bus in SoCal is usually priced higher than say ..anywhere else! j/k guys, kinda

I'd just go talk to the owner and get a feel for the situation, maybe they can't afford to fix it or register it so I'd offer something low but not insultingly low. Check the classifieds and then deduct thesamba inflation and there's your price. I'm sure you're looking for a better ballpark figure but there are too many variables. Keep us in the loop if ya get it.

It appears to be a 67, based on the one dash knob visible. The radio opening seems to be the large 67 one, but on the other hand, I don't see any back up lights. Early 67? No back up lights in European 67s? What do I know?

I'd just leave a note asking if it's for sale...if you do get the call, you can always see what kind of offer he's looking for. That way you don't insult him by offering something way too low, or shoot yourself in the foot by offering something a lot higher than he was looking for.
But I also agree - I'd want to crawl around up underneath first to check out the rest of the rust areas...

I'm not convinced it's a true westy. No auxilary power outlet in the rear over the left tail light (euro?), no visible child cot mounts, pop out window in the closet area (have never seen that 65-67). The only thing that says real westy to me is the table lights on the drives side, at least I think I see them in the pics.

If it is a euro bus, it has us spec bumpers and us spec tail lights. Yes, I know anyone can change that out. Headlights appear to be euro.

I guess the only way to tell for sure is the good old m-code plate. One last thing, when you look under the bus make sure it has belly pans, if it doesn't, the top was probably hacked in and I would stay away from this one. My opinion.

My bus sports a michigan plate and last time I checked it didn't scare anyone. Wink

i've seen more than one westy dormobile with pop outs, never taken notice of the electrical outlet. never payed attention to the childs cot brackets either, but it stands to reason it wouldn't need it with two bunks in the roof.
agreed that no belly pans means it's not a westy, but it could have been done by another company.

early 67's didn't get them in the us, no idea about euro spec.

Gotto agree on the rust input/comments. Understatment of the week: the rocker repair is..."lacking in quality exucusion". Also, my '66 Westy did not come with belly pans. Always wondered if it was supposed to have 'em. Confused Seen no evidence that it ever did. Confused This top looks more like a Dormobile top to me...

It is a dormobile top, definitely. That is a huge hole in the roof. Did Dormobiles conversions have belly pans?

What about the "regular" Westys...perhaps an SO42?

No, SO-42s did not need belly pans. The hole for the poptop is just not that large.
