I got mine from Ronnie (Splitpile) and it seems to work great. I've used it a lot as a fuel shut off valve with having engines in and out. Be sure to install it with two fiber gaskets and make sure it's good and snug against the tank.

The other day I actually used it while driving the '61 and it worked perfect. I knew the fuel tank was getting low (close to 200mi. on full tank with 1600sp) and was ready to pull it at the first sign of a stumble. That was the first time I ever used a fuel reserve lever. Laughing

I seem to be in the same boat as most others here.
I have a nice German fual tap on the way, but no lever.
I'm posted a wanted ad, but figured I'd ask here to see if there was a source yet?

I ended making my own - thanks to Everett for posting pictures of the lever...
I did end up making my lever just slightly longer than stock... just long enough that the cable hits its stop when the lever is just at the end of its throw... i'd say i made it a little extra heavy duty too... i could have used some thinner steel bar, but this was sitting in my garage...
I thought about knocking out a few for a few people here on the forum, but for such a little piece, this took some time - filing out those holes to just the right shape and size...
not hard to make, just took a some patience...

While on the topic of fuel taps. Could people please post pics of the different styles of taps and what they are from/correct for.
Here is a tap I have. Can anyone ID it?

Looks like early Beetle ('54 for example). What is the number next to the VW symbol? I have a '55 Barndoor one with the little arm that switches the reserve on, it has #19 on it. The '54 Beetle one I have has #33, no arm...the arm can be added.

The above tap has #s 5607 under VW symbol, RGM above it, Looks like "KARO" on the other side. It is an 8mm outlet tap. It's still really dirty, I'll clean it up and see if I can see any other numbers.
Thanks for the info.

Good timing on this thread. I just got my fuel tap disassembled today on my 53 beetle. Here are a few pics.

What is the purpose of the 5mm tapped hole on the right hand side. I had to drill the screw out because I couldn't get it removed?

Here is the tool that I made to remove the spring loaded nut on the side.

Barndoor or Split/Early Oval Beetle.

Barndoors are threaded on the little ball that comes out since a little arm threads in there.

Here's a better photo with more exact measurements:

looking for some advice on a fuel tap i was trying to get apart. i stuck it through a hole in the workbench and tapped the part that pushes against the ring with a socket to get the ring off. the problem is that part is now stuck and will not pull out. wtf can i do to get this thing out without destroying it? i tried compressed air but no luck.

update, i managed to get the tap apart. this was the early tap without a dust boot. i think i know what caused it to be difficult to remove the spindle and cap. when i tapped the cap down to remove the lock ring i think i distorted the cap somewhat causing it to be tight in the tap. whatever you do don't tap the cap all the way down in ther to loosen it. that really made it a pita to remove it. i made a new rubber seal so i hope this thing works and dosen't leak.
i still need to get one of the broken brass tubes out if anyone has any tips there. i am thinking drilling them out would be the best thing to do. i have the broken tubes to reinsert afterwards.

i just drilled mine out with a 3.5mm drill. i then filed the end of the tube slightly into a point then tapped it in with a hammer. in order to make doubly sure it was tight i've just daubed some araldite (epoxy resin) around the edge, and i'm waiting for it to dry now.

yeah i ended up drilling mine out as well. just drilled with 2 size's of bits until i was left with a very thin shell of the tube. used a hand held tap tool and a larger bit to gently twist the rest out. i was just careful to drill straight in.
for those who have made their own gasket, what thickness did you use. i used 1/16 inch cork, but have not tested it yet.

I have *exactly* the same problem now...how you managed to remove it?

Oh yes I was stupid enough not to pay enough attention to your words even if I read this thread before *sigh* Rolling Eyes
