Came across this thread a few years ago since I was the most recent owner of the "Mermaid Bus". I bought the bus from a guy in Ft. Myers that did some wacky 3D moldings and was planning to do the same to this bus to promote his business! I'm assuming he bought it from manOsteel because he mentioned the previous owner had just lowered the bus. Reason I'm posting is to give an update as she sits now after I took her apart and gave her a new lease on life!

easiest way to get top coat of paint off without ruining orig vw paint is to use oven cleaner. (outside due to fumes) certain brands work better than others. spray on foam, leave for between 5 and ten minutes, keep an eye on paint, use plastic scrapper ie icecream lid etc to test paint to see if softening, then hit with high pressure gurney and repeat process, (dont try and scrape paint off, use pressure cleaner.)takes a while but you are left with orig paint, being enamel. if you leave it on too long it will eventually soften enamel too.

advice given to me, don't know havent tried it but maybe worth a shot

Congratulations to a fellow newcomer to the world o' the VW bus! I picked mine up Saturday and I know your feelings of wandering into the garage for no apparent reason, just to spend some time looking at your VW(s) and smiling...

I'll tell ya what, I would definately get those vavles adjusted, grease everything, change oil (motor and tranny), and cross your fingers. I only stress these points because I just drove one about that same distance that should have made it without thinking twice and 15 minutes from home wouldn't ya know it something happened. Also make sure you get a fire extinguisher for that thing, not just that one in particular but I have heard enough horror stories that I wouldn't think of leaving home without one. Other than that do what you thinks right I know she always made a 45 minute trip going 60 -65 just fine.

It's probably a 2 hour drive by car and I'm guessing a 3 hour drive by VW bus. Do you think she'' make it?

Well I just picked up a tranny for it so now I am waiting on metal. Other than that it is a complete shell and ready to get fixed. Just been picking little odds and ends here and there for it. Glad everything went good with the transport.

Congrats, reading your first post made me smile. I was the same way when I got my first split window. Of course I just bought my sixth one two weeks ago and I still had that giddy feeling. Very Happy

I started a little bit with removing the peace symbol on the passenger side door, but I got a feeling it's gonna be a long proceess. I'm thinking about trying some of that easy off, but I'm afraid of damaging the original paint.

Kool! Cool I thought you'd react by going into convultions and twisting yourself into a pretzel, but it seems like you do have the right idea! Razz

Don't give up just yet! Keep at it and though it may take a long while you will be much happier with the results! Wink

God knows that's the condition I like to find buses in....OG paint with half ass paint over it!!!
Id use a mixture of laquer thinner/rubbing compound/ fine to medium steel wool and 6-pack and hit that baby. Looks like a turquoise or velvet green, cant tell by pics.
Good luck an have as much bus fun that you can bear!!!!
