I had an elderly gentleman stop me at a gas station and asked if my 66 had a Porsche motor in it. He was asking because he saw the 36hp shroud and dual carbs.

He was also one of the very few people who knew what the car cooler was that is mounted in my passenger window.

I guess you had to be there.

I just love how toddlers who don't even know what a car is yet, open their eyes wide and start pointing when a Beetle comes down the street. There really is something about the "face" of a Beetle that has a deep down appeal.

That reminds me of a couple of months ago I was parked in the lot of our local pharmacy when this nice looking mommy came out of the pharmacy with 2 young toddlers in tow. The little boy with her ran across the parking lot straight to my car with this look of wonderment on his face. The moment was priceless!

Just about to drive across a bridge when I hear a lady calling out next to me:

Her: "Hey an old bug! Nice bug!"

Me: Thanks!

Her: That was my first car! What year?

Me: 1970!

Her: Mine too! A 1970! Same color too! Looks great! Bye!

I live in a little town of about 1500 people. One day I was out driving my Kelmark on the main highway through town and saw a guy in a brown Ferrari coming the other way. Shocked He was looking at my car with his jaw dropping and struggling with the shoulder harness to get his arm out of the window to wave at me. Very Happy I waved back and then headed home. figured I'd better not let him catch up to me and figure out my scam! Sad

When I got home I looked on line to see what kind of Ferrari it was. I knew it was one of the more "pedestrian" models, if there is such a thing. As near as I could tell it was a Dino 308 GT4.

Had a good one on my way home from work tonight. Stopped at the local Taco Bell in my 67. Pulled up to the window after ordering, a woman probably in her 30s was working

:waiting for me to get my money out of my wallet:
Woman : gonna get a paint job soon?
Me with a grin: nope!
Woman: oh, sorry.
I could tell she was worried she'd offended me
Me: no, you're fine, I'm used to it Very Happy

Last week my son and I were driving our '68 panel van in town when I hear a guy going nuts yelling at me from his car beside me. I decided to pull over and let him have a closer look since I had never seen someone that excited about our VW! He was a retired mechanic who had worked on aircooled VWs, and hadn't seen a panel van in a really long time. He was happy to have caught up to me after following from a few miles back. Did I mention he was driving a badass '32 Ford coupe beautifully customized with close to 400hp? That might have had something to do with me pulling over for a look Wink

I'm at the paint store getting some supplies to repair my fender (guy ran a stop sign).

As I'm paying for my stuff, the cashier looks out the window and sees my bug,

"Aaaawww! Who's little buggie is that!?!"

"Oh, that's mine"

"Aaaawww, SLUG BUG!"

She reaches across the counter and punches me on the arm!

It wasn't hard, but surprised me...we all had a good laugh.

one of the first times i got to actually drive my car, I pulled into a parking lot and saw two ladies coming at me in their truck. As soon as the passanger noticed me, she got this huge shit eating grin on her face and mouthed the words slug bug and smacked the shit out of whom I assume to be her mother. The look of laughter and joy made me smile.

Most people who see my single cab around town think I made it from a full bus. Sorry, I'm not that clever.
The funniest though are the many, who stop, in traffic, to take a picture of it.

Wow, so this has been going since 2005. Cool!!

OK, so I was in Texas at a local grocery store where they have young kids bag your groceries and take them to your car. I had a young girl about 16 years old help me.

We walked through the parking lot to my '67 bus. We stopped close to it and she said "Is this yours?". I said "Yeah, it's my baby". She said "My, that's an odd looking vehicle!". I said "Haven't you ever seen one?". She said "No, I don't think so".

I was caught off guard but realized....in East TX a young person may not even know the bus or its history. I just laughed and told her "Back in the day, these were THE vehicle to have....a different time and place". She just smiled.

And so it goes.....
