fuel filter question

I am in the midst of replacing the fuel filter in my 86 syncro (gee, do you think they could make the filter any less accessible?) and have dilemma:

according to my bentley, and my own eyeballs, the filter is between the fuel pump and the engine, ie, downstream of the fuel pump. therefore, the filter outlet should lead to the engine, not to the fuel pump, right? when i took the old filter off, the outlet led to the fuel pump. (just to confirm we are all on the same page here, the arrow on the body of the filter points in the direction of flow, according to logic and bentley- therefore the arrow should be pointing away from the pump- on the old fuel fiter it was pointing toward the pump.) Therefore, i am assuming that the old filter was installed backwards.

however, because i am paranoid and a wasserboxer newbie, i am going to follow ronald reagan's advice- "trust, but verify."

the arrow goes to the engine, not the fuel pump, correct?
