maybe there is 5/6mm extra meat in the starter mount location, pushing the starter gear 5/6mm away from the engine, and the pinion kind of still being in the correct place -ie not sticking out of the gearbox mounting face, making the engine not sit flush

Yeah, I should have mentioned that the 091's (which all used the 228mm flywheel) have their own starter motor that must be used with the 091 bellhousings.

However, I have read somewhere that the area where the starter motor bolts up to the bellhousing can be milled down so you can use a regular T1 starter, but I can't remember how much has to be milled down. Does anyone else know?

Here is a good article about clutches by Glenn. Very useful info, and it goes into more detail than my post about throwout bearings...

-hello

091 box, simply bolt a rx-8 bell on, use the 225 flywheel and a 228 vw friction plate

091-Side Shift
This is the one that can be converted to nose shift.
Essentially the same as the Bus 091 and can be converted to nose shift.
Found in '80-'83 Vanagons with the T4 engine.

Just a point, the automatic you have shown is an 010 from a type 2

The type 3, type 4 and early type 2 use the 003 automatic, with the type 2 using a different diff housing similar to the 010 automatic

An early 003, note the mounts absent on the bellhousing and bolts around the drive flanges. Photo source http://www.stormseeker.org/VW/vrod/old_blog/blog1.htm

This is the manual transmission from the 411/412, these have the offset diff similar to the automatic. They have the pinion on the bellhousing side of the gearbox with the input shaft running through the pinion shaft similar to the 003 automatic.

Thanks for those pics and info. I was going to cover that at some point, but the time hasn't been available for me to research it.

Thanks for helping out with that... Cool

Bus IRS Swap. Info to be added at a later date.

I was unable to find any info on this. I am change from sedan IRS tranny to a 3 rib (earily model) bus tranny.

I have a rail buggy with a sedan tranny and 1600cc engine with IRS rear 2x3. The tranny would not go into 1st or 3rd gear . So I decided that 3 rib would be better for hill climbs and muddin because they are stronger. I felt i could just swap out the tranny and go, and use the sedan ( bug) parts on it .
Well being new to the rail Buggy world , I found out that this is a major change and will cost you a good penny to do. I was wanting to do this as cheap as possible.

Here is the list of things so far i needed to buy to do the swap:
1. Bus tranny kit - $55.00
2. shifter adapter ( puts the shifter down to the right hight) - 20.00
3. 2 bus cv`s joint - 50.00 each
4. 2 tubes of high temp grease - 3.00 each
5. 2 bus boots - 10.00 each
6. 12 bus bolts - 1.00 each (longer than bug)
7. 2 - bus to bug chassis axles 15 5/8" - 240.00 pr

8. 3 rib bus tranny - 300.00

I plan to run bus cv`s on the inner and sedan cv`s on the outers to save some money. Concerned about the angle though!?

I was told that I could save money by using the sedan axles and take them to machine shop to machine the so the bus cv will fit ( bus cv is fatter 1/8") and also take the stub axles there have the redrill new holes for the bus cv to fit. You would have to use bus on both sides of the axles then.
Other wise you need to buy the stub bus axles too which about 200.00 for the pr.

I have been surfing the net for answers about this conversion because it seems like it others have done it but not really finding any specific write ups about it. If you know of one send it to me!

Thanks,

the 15-5/8" are to use a bus transmission with bug trailing arms. and $20 is a cheap price for used axles that can be found at a wrecking yard or in the classifieds here on thesamba.

I would like to use it in a fastback with a wasserboxer engine.

Gene Berg also made these years ago, but discontinued the part for over 20 years. They now make two versions again that I understand work very well. I'll be using one to run a bus tranny and 2.0L in my long buggy.
