HEY! Now don't you go read something out of nothing into anything. I appreciated the humor in the post preceding mine and thought I might stick a foot in my mouth to celebrate...

Maybe you could just get in the car and help me get a bunch of us to the Arctic Circle for the 2007 Solstice Party.

In 2007 the solstice falls on June 21.

Okay, just to make sure this thread goes full circle and gets back on track... Confused

Maybe the Auto trans will be repaired or another in place and the engine freshened in time to make the trip Cool Laughing Wink

Now... anyone had any luck rebuilding their own auto trans or any stories good bad or otherwise about auto rebuilds, general experience with getting them fixed etc.?

i have a bit of experience with having them repaired. i just did one for a customer, a 76, so it was the 010.

usually the seals, clutches and the brake band are all that is replaced in a rebuild, but in this case i had to replace the valve body also. one complaint before the rebuild was that the trans did not have passing gear. i thought it was probably the throttle cable adjustment, but checked it before removing the trans and it looked good. after the rebuilt was installed, the trans still did not kick down. i replaced the valve body and all was good. luckily the vavle body can come in and out with the trans in the vehicle.

basic rebuilding of an auto trans yourself is easier than you think, and for sure easier than doing a VW manual transaxle because the diff is separate for the tranny, this make the job a whole lot simpler. the parts to rebuild an 010 or 090 auto tranny are readily available, parts for a 003 are not. when you open one up you'll be amazed at how little there really is inside.

in a bay you need to remove the entire drive train in one piece to re and re the auto tranny - not sure about this on a vanagon. i've seen people take the engine out alone, but it really doesn't come out properly, you will end up with bent lower engine studs for sure if you try. i have a fixture that i use, it bolts to a large floor jack and holds the entire drive train, so i can remove and install the complete mess myself.

The Vanagon allows you to drop the transmission and keep the engine in, you do need to support the flywheel end of the engine.
