Diesel Tach

Ok I have a 1986 Vanagon that I am converting to diesel.
It has a tach in it and I once heard the you can I think it was soldier something inside the tach to make it work off of the pulse conector on the alternator.
Anyone?

some have added a TD tach from a jetta/quantum TD into the vanagon cluster,
yes you do need a alt with a W terminal,
or go with this slick kit from Dakota Digital
