The '62 that I learned to drive in. It was totaled in 1970 when a truck hit it broadside. (No injuries, fortunately.) _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

What kind of injuries did you get from the steering wheel coming up and hitting you/you hitting the steering wheel? |
walked away with 12 stitches in my upper lip below my nose. no setbelt and no brakes from 45mph into tree.. im convinced it would've been worse had i not had the spare tire in the trunk.. drivers wheen creased so far in it trapped my knee between inner wheel well and the seat. i always clowned my friends who put later style "collapseable" steering column in their cars. im sold on them. the steering wheel bent on my face. horrible evening. dont drink and drive, its not worth it.[/quote]
I have a collapsible column in my 64, didnt know other people did that. |

It wasn't fun. Now, as to speed, I'm just repeating what the State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit told me. I had a little hotter motor, cam, dual carbs, etc. and I'm a fairly tall guy so my foot was on the roller gas pedal. They estimated I was doing just over 100 when I fell asleep.
I veered into the median as I approached an overpass. The car started to skid, it got 90 degrees to highway and hit the galvanized guardrail square with the passenger door, creasing it good and pushing it waaaay in. When that happened, the whole car bent and the driver door sprung open and the car kept going at a high rate of speed, but was now going backwards.
When I got to the cement post of the overpass railing, the open driver side door sucked right around it and tore the door and basically the front clip off. (You can see it laying to the side in the pic)
When the door was torn off the car flipped upside down and skipped on the railing 6 times, then fell off the edge, down 30 feet, bounced, bounced again, at which point I finally fell out, and the car bounced up onto the RR tracks.
When the train came by, it carried the car close to a mile. I woke up laying on the ballast rocks the RR ties float in. Apparently the train woke me up. The engineers said when they got stopped and found the car empty, they expected to find a corpse when they walked back, but no. I was lying there with my head propped up on my elbow, being casual.
The tracks were down fairly deep, and when I saw the flashing lights show up, I tried to escape by crawling, but didn't get too far. The paramedics put me in one of those baskets, hauled me up the side of the overpass, and took me to the hospital. 30 days later I walked out. |
