I'm bringing this ancient thread back from the dead because this exact vehicle has been found and is undergoing restoration. I've been aware of its existence in a cold-storage garage in Wilder, VT for at least a decade. It was recently unearthed, sold, and is now in the possession of my friend Mitch. I'm trying to track down history on it. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it! I'll post pictures when I get them.

This is the only other picture I took of it. Had enough time to wind the camera and aim but ended up a crappy shot. Had to stay in the tent and sell parts so I didnt track it down for more pics.

Found out some more info!

The car was owned in the late 80's and possibly into the 90's by a Duncan C. Syme, who was one of the founders of the Vermont Castings woodstove company. Considering Mr. Syme's background in engineering-- he held several patents for stove designs-- I think there's a very good chance that he was the original builder as well. The fabrication is exemplary, with very little filler used to smooth out the weld joints.

I have tracked down two phone numbers for Mr. Syme, one local (which I assume is a summer home) and one in Arizona. I will be attempting to contact him tomorrow!

I also found a tag inside the glovebox indicating that the vehicle attended the 1992 Antique Truck and Tractor Show at Owls Head Transportation Museum in Maine. I'll be contacting the museum tomorrow in search of archival information, and hopefully pictures, from the event.

This car was at Kubel Treffen East in Asheville in the 90's.
If I remember right the guy that owned it drove it down from VT. I believe he was an accountant.
The morning of the show he was up at daybreak wiping the car down.
He went in his room to change and came out wearing a kilt which he wore all day. He said it was a NATO uniform.
I'm sure other people remember talking to this guy, he was quite a character. Vince

I have seversl still photos of the 6-wheeled Thing from the 1993 or so KubelTreffen in Ashevilld (that's where I met Vince Sadowsky and fhe Domecks). The owner wss a very curious short guy, had big glasses and the aforementioned kilt. Back then the car had brown fenders and a bizzare tonneau top witha "whacka-a-mole" hole were the driver could pop out his head. The owner/accountant was also upset he did not win a trophy.

I will look for the pictures this weekend, and if found I will post.

Through an interesting series of events, my son E. Washburn came to possess this 6 wheeled Thing which he has now passed on to me as he needed parts that I have for his own project. Therefore, I will will be re-assembling this very unique Thing. Not sure yet what direction it will go, however I do know that it will be lowered and will have different lights front and back. Color to be determined. Will post pics as they come available. Any pics of it "back in the day" would be very helpful.
