I was wondering if anyone else has this switch in their van? I am trying to figure out it's purpose? P.S., I was wondering if anyone knew of a good spot to get full westy decals from, I want them all for when I paint the bus? Inside and Outside decals. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/ganserelli/DSC00083.jpg

Looks like a rear defroster switch but the symbol is a bit differant than mine, I've heard of some later models having heated mirriors, might be that?

What year is your bus? Does it have power mirrors? They might be heated as mightyart says. Most of my buses have just had a block off plate there.

My '90 has heated mirrors but there is no switch to turn them on and off. I know they work cause they melt the snow and ice on them, just no switch. Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but that switch is definitely for a heated....something. The rear window defroster switch is above the hazards.

DubTech,

If your mirrors on the '90 Vanagon are properly wired, the heat elements in them are controlled by the rear window defroster switch.

Rear window defroster: ON - mirror heat ON, too.

As for the 85 Canadian Westfalia, is that switch for heated seats? I know that was an option for Canadian Vanagons.

That makes sense...though I wasn't wondering HOW they worked, all I care about is they DO work.

Definitely a rear window defroster switch. It's the newer style symbol, probably a replacement switch. The little green light on the rocker is the dead giveaway.

Then what does the switch above the hazards do? It would be nice if we could see all 3 switches in the photo. Mine and every other Vanagon I have seen have the defroster switch above the hazards. I assume the OP doesn't have an owner's manual?

I've seen Euro Vanagons where that is for the front/ rear foglamps. I just assumed Canadians are the same, but maybe not. Yes, it would be nice to see the symbol on that switch. I've never seen a Vanagon with a separate switch for the heated mirrors, unless maybe they were retrofitted to an earlier car by the dealer.

It's the space for the fog lamps switch on the vanagon to, if you have the option. I actually have the switch and wiring on mine but no fog lights, and if you don't pay attention you can switch the switches by accident. Wink (they're the right way now Laughing )

I will post a picture of all three switches later, but that being said the top switch on the van looks like the rear defroster switch. box with waves through it. I will post later with the three switches.

Fog lamps. Definitely fog lamps.

Not only is the switch placement correct for fog lamps, but the symbol on the switch is of a rectangular light with a lamp filament symbol inside.

Art, yep - your switch has the now-standard Euro symbol for fogs, but I'm thinking this other symbol is another way of saying the same thing.

Worse comes to worse, start follering wires.... Smile

Go Westy for sure on the decals allthough they are not totally correct for the later vanagons, but probably as close as your gonna get. They also have the poptop decals and the older version sticker with the Prancing Horse.

Along those same lines, anyone know if someone is selling a pretty close sized "westfalia" sticker in proper font that would be a replacment for the metal on the cabinet (under the sink/stove)? I did some mods (added 12v plug and better switches) to mine and also stripped the old paint and repainted. I would like to get a decal for that and maybe even something for the "information center" as I took out the POS toggle and welded up the hole and painted that as well!

It's a 'transmogrifier' switch, check with the parts department at
Calvin & Hobbs VW, oh and, Go Westy for the decals, be sure to remove the old ones completly before installing the new ones.

Big B, I like the way you think! But if I remove the old ones completely how will I know where to put the new ones? LOL. You know I might just push the switch?

That is a VW replacement rear window defroster switch. VW's symbol for fog lights is a D preceeded by three squiggley lines representing fog and two elongated backslashes ( / ) representing a lowered light beam. The indicator light would be amber. You'd have to trace the wire to see what it is hooked up to.
