Is there a source for the original-style rear deck tar boards?
I'd ready to redo that area and would prefer to use something that looks original. Otherwise I'll go with some dynamat equivalent.
The tar stuff appears to be 3/16" inch thick.
Example (not my Bus):
|
I recently parted out a '69 that had perfect tar boards under the rear mat. They still feel new. I used a scraper to take them off without a hitch. If there's any bays at the junkyard take a look there. I saved all of them to use on my bus. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

My 62 Flipseat has 'em too and I'd guess that SO23's might as well. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Go down to Kragen Autoparts, near the bondo will be Marhyde brand paint remove or aircraft stripper buy it , put it on there, let it soak, put on some more and then scrape your stuff right off, this stuff is the cat's meow when it comes to removers, but make sure you buy the MARHYDE brand and nothing else, the rest is junk |
Acetone will melt that shit, too. Makes a big damn mess. _________________ OGST

I called the MBZ dealer here, they were $27 each and they didn't have any in stock so I couldn't get dimensions.
My local Home Depot only sells the new closed cell foam expansion joints now but I found some online pics of the old ashphalt based strips and it looks promising. Thanks doveblue3.
The Home Depot stuff actually looked pretty good at $12 for a 50' x 4" roll. |
thats strange that they didnt have the asphaltic stuff. i just bought some last month when i poured my driveway. i did buy it at lowes though, not home despot. |

The dealer that wants $27 is raping you. True list is $14.50!
They measure about 18" x 5".
I can supply as many as you want for $10.50 each + postage. |

Thanks for checking. Phoenix sucks, both MB dealers were $27.
What's the thickness?
The strips are primarily 2.5" wide. You need 16 4' x 2.5" strips, which comes out to 24 sheets. Damn...
Lowe's has the asphalt expansion joints. They are asphalt-covered pressboard(?) as opposed to asphalt-impregnated so they break if bent. Cheap though, only $1.26 each. _________________ How to Post Photos

for what its worth, I plan on masking off the raised ribs and spraying rubber undercoating on. From a distance it will look like felt and provide a similiar sound deadening... |

my floor was covered in tar - the aircraft stripper was slow, sloppy and very stinky at removing it - had much better luck with a heat gun and a 2"scrapper - i ended up marring the floor pretty good so i then did a quick aircraft strip of the paint and applied masterseries CT:

Sorry for the hi-jack. BUT...Mark How did you like the Masterseries stuff? Getting my Notch back from paint soon and need to coat inside the doors, roof etc prior to interior install. Tried both Rust Bullet and POR 15 before. POR covered better in one coat but can't be painted... _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

I thought the padding looked more like tar-impregnated felt to me.
You can get raw wool felt from McMaster-Carr.
Here's a link:
McMaster-Carr Link
I would guess you'd need the 1/4" or 3/8" thickness. You want the stuff to fill in the valleys so that a carpet or cargo floor card will lay flat, but press down slightly on the padding to absorb noise.
The 3/8" thickness in a 12" by 60" sheet, part #8756K14, is $45.
Let us know what you decide to use.
I also see they sell a felt sample kit with all their felts for $4.50 so you can check out which grade would match best. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

If you really aren't concerned by looks TMI sisal padding would work perfect, paint it black and who would know. a 3 foot by 6 foot piece is around 13 dollars (all approx). I can show you it a BBB. My 63 flip seat had the srips in the back. I carefully removed a nice set from a donor bus out back _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

Any updates on the MB tar strips mentioned in this thread? How did they look and fit?
How about other original looking materials that people have used recently?
Thanks,
Neil |

I'm on the hunt for original tar strips but considered the Mercedes stuff, since it looks decent in Everett's pics. Unfortunately, I just called my local Mercedes dealer and they quoted me $40 for one sheet! _________________ drive it. break it. fix it. repeat. |

On a side not call a diff dealer list is only 32.50 at the dealer so they are doing little bit of a mark up on ya. If your a shop you can get it for 27 bucks. Still its going up just like everything else. _________________ Jonathan
