Sounds like you and vdubjim are both having DDB problems at the same time with nothing happening...

Does anyone know Martin well enough to talk with him to get a straight answer to figure what is going on with my engine and if i am ever going to get it? |
Why don't you take charge of the situtation? It's your engine and your money. |
The guy is in Kansas, his engine, money and parts are in Oregon. We're supposed to look out for each other here. Why don't you take your attitude back to STF or the Rants?
I think Martin or somebody DDB had better get the hell in here and start tellin' their side of the story. I don't care for this one bit. I hope there's a damn good explanation, because Type 3 guys just don't pull this kind of shit. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Ah, shut your face, old man. He knows what I meant, don't get all whiney in here.
J, you have rights, and you don't have to fly out there to deal with it. If he doesn't want to answer his phone, then you send him a certified letter, signature required. Start the legal process. Wait a couple weeks, and send another one. Once you've done it twice, if he doesn't respond, report him to the better business bureau. That's a good start. It will motivate most. If that does not work, THEN you have a papertrail you can use as sufficient attempt to contact the guy. Then proceed legally. You can't lose if you have a papertrail and proof of payment, because he sure as hell doesn't have any proof that he has delivered. |

fuck dude... relax.
can somebody in the portland area or somebody that knows martin personally drive by and find out whats up with the engine and the issues that vdubjim are having?
it's not cool if he isn't answering the phone.. but let's hope its because he is swamped with orders and cars that he is working on. _________________ '54 Kombi | '57 356 Coupe | '57 Samba | '62 Notchback | '63 Beetle (36k Original Miles) | '66 Pigalle Sunroof Squareback | '70 Westy |

I'm in Springfield a couple hours south but I'm going to try to give the shop a jingle tomorrow. Was going to do it today but I was pretty swamped all day. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I have NEVER heard anything bad about Martin ever. My question is why would you send a motor that far to be built? just curious as I am lucky being in Southen california and have many engine builders around me including people in our club. P.S. not bashing you for doing it. I am building a 2 litter for my fastback and again having the luxury of being able to stand over and pester my builder I would never dream of sending it out of state. Please keep trying martin via phone and E-mail he may just be overwhelmed and recovering from the holidays but I also agree that a 6 month wait is way too long. Also if you must take legal action you do have to put the money up front I.E. TRAVEL HOTEL EXPENSES can also be recovered in a law suit if it sadly came down to that. I am sure someone up there will whisper this in his ear and he will get back to you _________________ FUCK CANCER FUCK CANCER FUCK CANCER!!

I haven't been by the shop, or seen or talked to Martin, in about a month and a half. But just knowing how things usually are around there, I'm sure he's swamped .. tons of stuff to do and not enough time to do it all.
That said, the last few times I was there I at least saw *parts* of your engine. The tin was back from the powdercoating, looked damn nice. The new crank had been to the machinist for checking-over & balancing, case cleaned & bored. I don't remember much more than that, though .. just been too long.
I used to spend a *lot* of time helping Martin out around there, but my wife & I started having money issues .. and since then I've been spending way too much time working to even drop by the shop. Hell, I even missed the club xmas party that was held two weeks before xmas. |

Being busy is no excuse for not dealing fairly with your customers. Especially if you do it as a business as opposed to the hobby type of guy. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

he finally got it finished in October of 2005 and requested I pay him the remaining balance and then he would ship me the engine. |
If thats so then this statement worries me.

Doesn't finished mean ready to ship? Did he shuffle the initial upfront money like small business owners sometimes do and then wait till the payoff to actually do the build? This gentleman seems to have a solid rep but this story scares me from doing business with him in the future. _________________ 71 Square

Something must be going on at the DDB. A few weeks ago I swapped several emails with Martin about a trunk script he had. After I sent my address so he could figure shipping costs he just seemed to drop off the face of the Earth. I thought it was odd at the time, because I've bought some small parts from him before with no problem. _________________ Tony

Kansas City doesn't have a whole lot of choices for VW engine builders, so I decided to go with Martin and the DDB. I shipped the engine via ForwardAir at a very resonable price, so I was like what is the difference to have it done here in town or to have it done by someone who deals with VW type III engine regularly. I guess you live and learn..... |

next time you need one done, let me know: there is a guy in my area that does amazing work... he is back-logged by a couple of months usually, but simply does great work... _________________ póg mo thóin

We can build you an engine in the future just a couple hours down the road here in Wichita, KS. We have built multiple type 3 engines and every size type 1 and 2 engines over the years. Good quality and easier to come kick our *&%#%$ if we blow you off!!!

Hey, 69, tell Nathan I said hey from out here in Virginia!
I can second Sole. They did a nice job getting my case opened up for my bus engine. Very nice fit on the cylinders. |

mharney:
I will tell Nathan hey for you. Thanks for the second, we have featured 3 type 3's in Hot VWs and have built several more as daily drivers, my 69 fastback included. While this doesnt help out in this situation I would always suggest working with a shop closer to home for something as big as an engine. I have met Martin and he seems like a genuine person, but distance makes this tougher to deal with. _________________ Don't think of yourself as an ugly person, think of yourself as a good looking Monkey!!!!!
