I've been following this thread closely, as I was just about to order one of his T3 alternator conversions. Kinda ironic this should hit just after Hot VWs ran a story on that very same alternator conversion.

Alternator kits are small and simple compared to an engine and very easily packaged at the shop. Apples to oranges of a comparison.

I just met w/ Martin today. He's in business and is installing a new windsheild screen for me Friday. He usually doesn't answer the phone, e-mail him. BTW, I saw two motors in the shop. One w/ powdercoated red tin and one silver. Maybe one is yours?

I have been followind this thread for the last few days, Martin is also bulding a motor for me, the one with the red tin.
I am in the SF Bay Area not too far from Oregon but still a neighboring state. I could have easily chosen any number of local builders or a builder in So Cal.
I asked Martin to build my motor because of his passion for our cars and VW's in general, he has great knowledge of our cars thier history and a great vision for thier future. I have no doubt that he is building my engine with care and that it will be of a highest quality build.
I may be more paitent than others and I still too get a little nervous from time to time when I dont hear from Martin as I have waited longer than most of you care to know. But I know he will come thru and when he does it will be a motor to envy.

Well, if that is your engine w/ the red powdercoating I'm envious. It looks awesome and it also looks like it almost done. I had Martin powdercoat my wheels the same color as your tin.

Good to finally hear that all is well in DDB land. Hopefully he can get the business back on track in the near future.

I'm sure JBow1076 will get it sorted out w/ DDB. I think we should consider ourselves lucky to have someone who dared to open a business exclusively for Type 3 enthusiasts. I'm especially lucky to live ten minutes from the shop! Laughing

If people alienate businesses like The DDB we'll (T3 owners) all be worse off.

I had an engine built for a 76 912E by a shop that was local and had been (and still is) in business for 25 years. My Dad took his VW's to this guy in the early 80's! Anyway, it took him FOREVER to build that motor for me. Even with me calling him everyday and stopping by the shop to pester him, it still took a long time. I was pissed, worried, an anxious at the time and this guy's shop is 4 miles from my house! I know how JBow must feel being in Kansas. Boo hoo!

It takes time to get parts. It takes time to do assembly. Also, and Jbow needs to consider this, Martin isn't just an engine builder. He has people who are bringing cars in for repair so that they can get back on the road. If you want a motor now, buy a crated-longblock. Many people sell them. If you want something special do it yourself or be prepared to wait for it.

Sorry, but ANY business exists to serve its customers- NOT the other way around. Basic, basic business 101. Wink Customers don't alienate a business. Businesses alienate themselves. The guy who sends money, waits months with no response, then gets nervous and complains is the bad guy? Frikkin' come on!!! Laughing look, I like Martin as much as anyone else does, and I care about The DDB.... a LOT... and enough to send this message: PLEASE GET YOUR SHIITE TOGETHER!

I need a little help! In March of 2005 I sent my engine for my Fastback off to get a rebuild on it. I paid the builder half up front to get started. He told me the engine would be done around the beginning of June. He ran into a few problems along the way and then pushed the date back a little. No problem. Other things happened and he finally got it finished in October of 2005 and requested I pay him the remaining balance and then he would ship me the engine. He now has my money and I have still never received my engine. It is now Jan. 2006 and I can't get a hold of the builder who has my engine, my carbs I sent him and all my money. Has anyone every experienced anything like this? Does anyone have any suggestions on what actions I should take?

Now where does this come into play?

What ever, You're dreaming cuz. He said Martin told him his motor was done and called for final payment so he could ship the motor out. He paid up for a motor that was supposed to be completed and shipped out upon reciept of payment. That was back in Oct. He could have driven out there and picked up his motor been home put it in his car and been riding since Nov. But he has a life to attend to so that is not possible. Right now he is out his old motor, his carbs and the money he had for the new motor. Are you saying he should just roll over and take it or what?

We've got one side of this story. I've met the man. He's no scam artist and this guy's story doesn't make sense to me. I don't think we have the whole story.

Maybe we don't. But we'll never know until Martin says something.

He's probably too busy getting that motor done.

BTW, my name isn't "Cuz".

I'm just saying that we have one side of the story and having met the man personally I don't think Martin would rip anyone off. Something else has to be going on.

I offered to ask Martin about the guy's engine when I see him Friday to help sort this out even though it isn't any of my business. I'm sure there is an explanation but, unlike us, I bet Martin doesn't spend much time lurking on this forum and might not realize he's the topic of all this discussion.

Sorry bout that. That is an expression my buds and I use. I don't know either of the people in question. I agree there is another side of the story, you may want to put a little bug in Martin's ear about this thread if not about calling the guy from Kansas about his motor.

Sounds fishy? I saw two engines in an auto shop and didn't ask questions! Shocked OMG! What the hell are engines doing in here? #Bad Talk I went there to pick up a couple of parts not to play Columbo. Jeez!

I've been to his shop twice. I don't know him personally and have nothing to do w/ his business outside of being a customer. I will tell him about this thread tonight or tomorrow when I see him to pick up my car.

He better not be "getting it done". He already said it was done and had the guy pay up. Not to dog Martin, but I'm with Tram on this one. When you go in there Friday, ask Martin straight up about the engine and tell him the guy needs to hear from him ASAP. At that point, if Martin doesn't contact him within a couple days, his reputation goes even further down the drain.
