Aerostich has a range of applications for the 'BMW' plug, aka DIN4165. I have a heated jacket from Aerostich.

Question, which wire could I tap off of so that the socket is only powered when the van is running?

I think these are nice:

Problem is, I don't know which one the replacement for the Vanagon is?

Any ideas?

if you didn't want to re install the OG lighter sockett, why couldn't you just put a counter sink into a drill motor and shave off the outer lip that holds in in the dash hole ?

STILL CAN'T FIND THESE! I have been to all the auto stores and the Walmart. They just don't have the power outlets at all.

Anyone have an online source? I wish to get a lighted power socket with the clear bezel, it is part no.:

I grabbed a Eurovan power outlet at my local pick-n-pull the other day for $2, and installed it today.
Once you see how these things come apart, they aren't too tricky...but until then you can sit there and struggle with it for a long time!

I used a very small flathead screwdriver to push down on one of the little tabs of the lit up ring, while pulling the center out with my finger (after I unplugged the connector). The eurovan plug has the same connector as the vanagon plug, so I was able to plug the new one right in.

Now I just need to figure out why the bulb doesn't light.

West Marine.
They don't have the Casco brand, but do have some similar ones:

I decided why bother with the lighted ring, I've never needed to find it in the dark with the engine running and the dash lights on(and the PO had mysteriously cut the blue wire to the bulb anyway)
so I bought this one on a whim at a radio shack:

http://tinyurl.com/6dk55v

It was exactly the same diamerter as OE, the only difference is that it has a locating notch for the flap so I had to file a 1/32nd notch into the dash.
And I really like that it has a cover, no fingers can get caught in there.

Update, Casco told me that the new power outlets are being made in Germany. Not available in the US.

I know this in very basic but can someone explain in simple terminology if it is possible to splice off from the main cigar lighter additional cigar lighters within the van.

i.e. one for the iPhone/ iPod, GPS, Satellite Radio, Charger for the Digital Camera while driving.

I assume you could just splice off the main wire?

I have my cig lighter & stereo wired off my second battery currently.

Thanks,
Robert
