So I tore apart my engine the other day with the hopes of cleaning it up, replacing the bearings, and changing out the pistons and cylinders with new ones. But when I took out the crank, I saw that the one main journal in the middle of the case had a pretty deep groove wore in it from the bearing and I noticed that one of the rods had a lot of play in it. When I took the rod off the crank the bearing was completely chewed up. This left some pretty decent damage to the crank. So what are some of my options? I don't have access to any machine shops and I don't have the funds for a new case. What would be the life expectancy of the engine if I just replaced the bearings and put it back together as it is? Well I look forward to your expertise and maybe a good reality check here.

Now that is one hurting engine!
Toss it all away and start from scratch. _________________ Jake Raby

Yes, contact Dennis at Valley VW. Very knowledgeable and quick turn-around. You're crank can be reground, case will most likely need an alignbore, new bearings of course. Take a close look at your oiling system and any other suspect parts to find out why this happened, don't just slap it back together. _________________ Richard Sedoris - VW Performance & Machine - Youngstown, OH

It has been awhile since I last ran it, and I can't recall hearing any odd noises. I tore the engine out because I was getting gas in my oil from a leaky fuel pump. I did not run it at all after I discovered the gas in the oil. Just drained the oil and tore it out. I had never tore down the engine before and I didn't get much information off the guy I bought the car from, but I'm assuming the the engine had all of the original miles on it. Which could possibly be well over 100k. |

The gas in the oil is what spun the bearings.

So after a couple of weeks of tearing apart a couple of old cases looking for some usable parts, and coming up very empty handed, I took a trip to the VW Store.
Problem solved, thanks for the help. |

It looks like the cylinder registers have been painted. That will add a layer of soft paint under the cylinder. This could prevent the cylinders from seating properly. This will change the deck height by the initial thickness of the paint. If that paint compresses, deck height will be reduced as will stud torque.
The inside of the oil pump bore has been painted. Normally, the pump is an interferrence fit in that bore. When the pump is inserted, that paint will be scraped off and wind up inside the case.
Good luck.
