I have a friend who has a bus that looks like it was originally postal yellow. He was wondering just how unique it is.

Anyone have any ideas on how many postal yellow buses are actually in the US Question

I've never heard of anybody talk about that color throughout but I'd could have been. Was it maybe a school bus. I think they were yellow with a blue butt. Is it painted even in places that could reveal original other paint?

funny, I'm thinking of buying a bus right now that is yellow, though as far as I knew yellow was never a stock color. So if I may hijack your thread how about a discussion about yellow buses in general? Was there ever any? What is the story behind the "postal yellow" I hear about? Nice bus by the way. Hopefully I'll have one shortly!

are the safaris original to the bus? the tabs are yellow as well as are the popout frames. if so that bus is badass. id try to find out a history of it. if none available id restore it yellow for sure and keep the homemade camper interior but restore it very nicely. that bus would be sweet...unique and very functional.

There are a few Postal Yellow Trucks around.

Some know, some "unknown". Smile

I only know of one 23-Window, Mr. Merz owns it.

There are a couple Standards in CA too.

The Safaris are German.

So, there are maybe less than 10 postal yellow buses in the US Question

I'd like to see some more of the splitbus elders/wisemen weigh in on this...

I don't know if you could say that there are only 10 but I can tell you that I've personally only seen about 5 that I can recall.
Merz's '57 Deluxe
Corona Ryan's '59 Single Cab
Trevor's (think that's his name) '57 Standard
??? Pre '58 Standard I recall seeing at a show years ago
We cut up a '56 Postal Yellow Kombi about a year and a half ago

Those are the ones that I can immediately recall off the top of my head and have personally encountered.

Bottom line, there are very few existing and I'd embrace that uniqueness and positively keep it in the original color. I'd take the time and strip is back using Easy Off, even if you didn't get the best results.

hey guys, that's my bus Smile The safaris are factory, and the entire exterior seems to have been painted yellow (postal or otherwise). Since getting the bus a few years ago, most of the OG paint has been removed and primered over. I don't know, the yellow is just...ugly IMO. If someone wants to make me an offer for a trade or something so they can have one of the RARE "postal yellow" busses, go for it Rolling Eyes. As it stands right now, the color will be changing. I don't want to get rich off it, just something fair is all I'd like. Unless that happens...well, I gotta follow what I like.

I think I know where the one no vote came from Wink

That's not a bad idea to offer a trade. At least that gives a chance for the OG enthusiasts to step up. Maybe you should put a trade ad on here.

I'll think about it, I know my bus has alot of good points about it, and it'd take quite a bit to get me to sell/trade.

The good:
"postal yellow" og color Smile
factory safaris
og latches on 5 of the six popouts (one was changed to make room for the cabinet)
both og bumbers w/splash pans
splash pan under the pedals
correct rear apron
"0" major rust, just some surface rust
very little body damage (all just surface, none structral)
uncut dash

The bad:
the wrong wipers/pivots
wrong engine
wrong trans (but still a small nut tranny)
front tranny mount hacked out by PO
most of the og paint is gone (inside the cab and engine bay are pretty good)

What all do you think this bus is worth?? Me personaly, I think I'd need a 15(*edit* sorry that shoud be 13 or 15 window) window or better, 0 rust, decent paint, decent engine/trans, good straight bumpers, and an interior that is all there, but maybe needed to be redone.

Am I in the right ball park?

matt

I don't really know the value of your bus, but a good running and decent looking complete 15 window seems pretty high to me.

You are dreaming on the 15-window. 13-window - maybe.
