So what's the deal with them? Are they an accessory or standard equipment? My Herbie still has the original gas cap (like the second one with the smaller VW emblem) that's been in there since 1959.

Hmmmm, I like to know too.
The only thing I know that the 80mm is very rare here in Europe.
I found a NOS one a while ago, and it's now in my'55

My friend got a 100mm in his '54....so that one I had seen before, and they're in more pre '54 bugs I have seen:

Those caps have several monikers that people refer to them as. Sunburst, Piecrust, Cog etc... They fit 1956-60 fuel tanks so I'm guessing that's what they're used on.

Do you know if it was an optional cap? The reason I ask is there are 80mm caps like this one that don't have the cog. Maybe only certain years that got the 80mm cap had the cog design while others had the one below. I'm just curious. Thanks for your input.

When I got mine I was told it was an accessory cap with the outer rim made for a better grip in removing it for fill up......

Up until approx. 10 years ago, you could buy the 80mm cog type from VW dealerships. I know this because I bought 2 of them back then. So I think they were genuine VW later replacement caps.
If you look at the Blau website (manufacturers of caps for VW), they still make the same cog style minus the VW logo in 60, 80 and 100mm.
