You do not need a voltage regulator with an alternator - only when running a generator. They are different...

Thanks skidmark!

My bud said that the 3 prong connection is
-exciter
-ground
-hot....I think...don't remember the 3rd.

Which goes to the Alt/Gen Light, then to the fuseblock?

I know the one on the post goes to the starter.....

Jeff

***Copied and pasted from another web site***

Alternator Wiring

If you are replacing an alternator which uses an external voltage regulator (mounted under the rear seat) with an alternator having an internal voltage regulator, do the following:

Remove the small blue wire and the small green wire from the regulator (terminals (61) and (DF) respectively).

Cut off the push-on connectors from these wires and connect them together using a "butt" connector.

Connect the small green wire to the (D+) terminal on the alternator.

Remove the two large red wires from the (B+) terminal of the regulator. Cut off the push on connectors from these wires and splice them together with the red wire that WAS on the D+ terminal on the old generator using a "butt" connector. These two wires carry up to 50 amps to the battery, so the new connector MUST be big enough to handle that current.

Connect the red wire that was on the D+ teminal of the generator to the B+ terminal on the new alternator.

Reconnect the large red wire or a new 10-gauge red wire from the (B+) terminal on the alternator to the "30" terminal on the starter solenoid.

Note: Do not run the alternator without being connected properly from the (B+) terminal to the positive battery terminal. This can cause damage to the alternator!

Reconnect the cable to the negative terminal on the battery.

The (D+) terminal on the alternator must be connected to a working "Alt" light in the instrument cluster.

Note: A failed bulb will cause the alternator not to charge.

Check to make sure this bulb is working by turning on the ignition key (do not activate the starter motor!) If the "Alt" light in the instrument cluster comes on, the bulb is working and the alternator is grounded.

Thanks!
That explains the kit's design!

So, how do I know if the alternator has an internal voltage regulator or not?

Does your alternator have a white ceramic box looking thing on it? That is the voltage regulator portion... I haven't seen any VW aftermarket alternators with external voltage regulators. But then again, I can't claim to have seen everything. Hook it up like this explains, turn it on, and check for smoke!!!!

It's in a white cover...
Does that mean it has one?

Which prong do I connect to? Think Question

I really don't want to fry everything when I'm completed.

You do not have an internally regulated Alt. There's gotta be a regulator somewhere, unless you're putting this engine in this particular car for the first time. Usually they're under the back seat, driver's side.

I'm installing a wiring kit that doesn't use an external regulator.

So if this one isn't internal, that means I need to buy one with an internal regulator.

Is that the white cover you were speaking of?

Where did this Alt. come from?

And just because you're putting in a wiring kit that doesn't have the provision for an external Reg. doesn't mean you can't add them yourself.

It's in my bug. The first page shows a pic. I have a 68 bug. The motor (according to the case number) is a 73+.

If I can delete the regulator, I would like to. Less=simpler.

Plus the kit comes with a diagram that I will refer to in the future.

No. It's pretty simple:

1) I don't want the voltage regulator in the circuit. So, if I can delete it from the current setup, by purchasing an alternator with an internal regulator, then that is the direction that I want to go.

2) I'm not restoring to stock and I would like to keep it as simple as possible. I'm looking for info on the path I wish to take. (no external regulator)

DesertBob mentioned a white housing=internal regulator. I can only assume this is the housing he mentioned, but maybe not....I don't know. = which is why I'm asking questions.

Bottom Line: If this alternator has an internal regulator, I keep it. If it doesn't I go to (INSERT PARTS STORE HERE) and get one.

Thank you for your help and your wish of luck,Jeckler....and no thank you for your comment.

Nope. Mine was a large rectangular one. The cover was in fact the regulator.

Thanks! I'll check with Autozone and see what options they have.
Any recommendations?

Kustom1Warehouse was the cheapest when I bought my Bosch late last year. Autozone will be really expensive.

They are currently out of stock...

Here's my current progress. Fab'd and painted a piece of 12 ga metal as a mounting plate. The pic in the install shows a nice flat area to mount it....I wasn't that lucky.

Hope to get more wires hooked up today. Razz

I figured I was paying for their engineering and knowledge.

Part of my slow progress is the fact that there are things I didn't think needed upgrading, but do.

Things I plan on upgrading:
1) Ignition Switch
2) Light switch
3) Dimmer switch for high/low beams
4) Alternator (to internal voltage regulator)
5) Louder horn
