A note this morning on the karmannghia club of North America email list uncovered that many convertible owners would like to locate a source for the large rivet that finishes the trim on the hinge covers and lock pillar 'area'.

The 'smooth' rivets (both sides of rivet) that secures the lock pillar rubber cover (853-369) and the cv side panel cover strip (868-307). These rivets are totally smooth , no features on the outside as the top slides over them when up.

Can anyone help?

DaddyGo,

Jim has these rivets listed in the new catalog he had developed shortly before his passing. The trouble is that the new catalog has a new part numbering system, so I can't readily cross reference his old part numbers. Something he was going to do but never got arund to it. I'll have to physically check stock to see if they are there which will not happen until this weekend. But I'll get back to you on what I find.

Mike

I was the one on the email list. I'll take a couple sets ASAP.

Let me know.

HoG
Thanks for offering to dig into it... Richard Troy also wanted 10 pairs, and if you get it nailed down, you might post the availability to the KGCoNA which should get you some more orders.

Can you advise on the tool required to set the rivets?

First look at the inventory shows no signs of the rivets. Still doing some research so I'll get back to you with what I find.

I could not locate a metal rivet that I found acceptable so I opted for a two piece plastic snap rivet. It really finishes the trim nicely and I think it looks better with the black plastic cover strip (from KGP&R 868-307VALL RP PR) than the old metal rivet. Two additional advantages... it didn't take a special rivet tool, and they were FREE. They are rated for 40 lbs to disassemble which should be fine for this application.

I found them on the website below and offered to pay for a few pairs. ITW doesn't deal in small quantities so they suggested I just fill in the sample form and a few days later 15 of each the male and female parts arrived in the mail.

http://www.itw-fastex.com/catalog/027.php

236-220604-00 in black 2099 for the female snap rivet
236-220603-10 for the male snap rivet also in black

if you don't specify black, they automatically ship clear plastic.

Photos of the installation if you would like to see how it turned out:

I did have to drill out the existing hole to accommodate the larger diameter of the female piece to insure that it sat flush from the back side. Other than that, it was just a matter of measuring the location of the existing hole to line up the hole punch for the plastic cover strip and the lock pillar rubber cover(KGP&R 853-369VALL RP PR).

Digging up this older thread as I'm in need of these fasteners. Any Ghia convertible owners want to share their experience with replacing their Lock Pillar Rubber Covers and using these fasteners? It appears the company that stocks these rivets is still in business and offering this solution to fasten this rubber part to the car. If anyone has a set of original-style metal fasteners please PM me. Thanks!

Although they're not metal like the original parts, they do the job, and I'm satisfied with these plastic fasteners. I have a few left over if you're interested PM me.

I used something called Chicago Screws. They have worked well:

Put the smooth side facing out and tighten. You can cut them down if you need to.

Search Chigago screw on Amazon. They work like rivets but just screw together. They are used on leather stuff like holsters, shoes, etc. but will work for your Ghia. Darn he beat me by 11 min.s Laughing
