Sorry, didn't notice the subject.....so is it at least a fine exotic hardwood like Ash or Maple?, or just lumberyard crap?

Nope, I looked. I bought it how it is. And cheap. I'm not looking to restore it, just drive it. Once I get a running engine together. |

Does NOT fixing anything count??? My BUs needed pretty much Everything fixed. Especially the Aquarium quality tubing for vaccuum lines, and the feul line going across the engine tin w/ no gasket as well. Yes, the fuel line was cut half way through!!!

Never buy a bus with a bra on it...  2" thick Bondo.
Found this gem in a dealer's back lot in Beaver, PA around '89 or so. Type 1 motor, no key (nice hot switch panel, though) and a Stewart-warner tach planted in the clock hole. 3x3 steel rear bumper w/ hitch, I used it to tow my '70 Ghia vert down to Florida. The drivetain lived on to power a friend's cherry bay Westy he found without eng/trans.

Downunder we have a nickname for this sort of thing, It's called Bush Mechanics, My Dad was a terrible bush mechanic. Things like zip ties as throttle linkages, Plastic real estate signs to support rusty floors.
I mentioned to him that my rearseat 'Interior Trim' card kept falling off my 69 bug and when I got home from school he'd fixed it by screwing it in and the screws were sticking through to the outside.
I seriously learnt 'everything not to do' from my old man, he was a great teacher. Nowadays he comes other and watches me in my workshop, I carefully lay everything out, use correct parts, research everything first. If I stuff up I always think of my dad! lol

I believe the worst fixes to be no fix at all. Neglect kills VWs. From rust, to valves to leaking seals to oil changes... doing nothing does the most hands-down.

How do you like previous owners sway bar? I laughed when i bought this 74 and brought it home and climbed under it. And no I didnt drive it with this rebar sway bar, it hasn't ran since i purchased it.

That probably cost more for the welding wire than it did for the rebar to make it.

I think the mud wasp egg cases are helping hold that together. You know, 30 or 40 yrs. ago these cars were cheap, disposable even. A lot were owned by poor people who did whatever they had to in order to keep going. I'm afraid of seeing something I used to own here. LOL
