Look closely at those headlights. I think they are sealed-beam conversion assemblies that are bolted on. I think you can see screws that appear to hold them on using the stock headlight screw location. I know that sealed-beam conversions were very common in the 50's for 30's and 40's American cars.
Nice hinged engine vents, too.

Hey that's my Bus a early 52 us car from NY distribiting. Looked a ton better after all the barn dirt was washed off. The head lights were screwed on I still have them but turned the front back to stock. Nose was never hit They just wanted the funky lights I guess. If you look close at the dash you can see wiper bases mounted on the inside for defogging . the middle seat was at ECMSAS this year front row. bus is near 100% even has og engine. The swing out vent were put in the fill the gas .They had turned the tank around so filler was by vents, they even put in a church key lock. I drove this bus to a early Transporterfest, hope to have it back out again this year. Cool to see early pics of it as I did not have any. This just gong to fule me more to get back on the road. It is still mostly og paint.

Here are some pics Campingbox took in 2004.
When I looked at the bus to buy for a extra 900 I could have had the Okrassa motor that was in it I passed, wish I had'nt but it broke the bank buying for it 2500. At least I got the Orig 25hp engine.

Yes it was a NJ sticker it was scaped off before I bought it but you can still make out NJ and the big no 11 can't see a date. Bus was last driven back in the early 70's to late 60's before I got it. I only drove less than 50 miles before putting it away to work on. It lived in Nj but was serviced In NY or least had its engine change in NY and Penn as I have the factory Exchange engine books from 59 and 60. Funny they keep the Orig engine even after buying 2 replacment 36hp. In 59 it only had 33k on it and by 61 54k, they are the dates for the Exchange engines.I think it was around this time that the bus was used to travel alot as there are Rail train pass and lots of travel stickers from as far as Alaska and New mexico ect. and some other cool travel stuff.Maybe thats why they burned up the engine in only 20 k miles.
Anyone Know how to find contact info from the 1960's? I have a name and address from the owner in 61. |

Sweet Bus Jim.
Aside from the additional wipers, are there any other interesting add-ons? What are all the extra fuses for?
That was indeed the nicest and most comfortable 54 year old seat I have ever rested on.

From what I recall, Larry didn't do the work of putting on those shows--a guy who used to be PA Chapter Rep for VVWCA, Joe Alackness, busted his butt to produce those events. I am well aware that Larry is a big time vintage enthusiast, and he really went out of his way to clear out his lot to allow the shows to happen. But without a hard-working visionary about the car show itself, my guess is it wouldn't happen.
I had some experiences producing some VW events up here in CT too, back in the 80s, at a VW dealership (Montesi VW, North Haven, CT). Same kind of thing--the dealership people moved their cars out for show day, but weren't really involved with the show itself in any way. It was a lot of work on my part, and I don't miss doing it! Montesi occasionally asks me about "when are we going to do a show again?", but my response is: "it ain't gonna be me that makes it happen." _________________ Stock Steve

i wouldn't expect larry to do a thing for the show except say "ok" and only if he meant it. i'll see if i can get ahold of him this coming week. if so, maybe we start putting plans together for an event, however informal at holbert's. _________________ Extravagant Lifestyle

jim, it sure is good that you got the original engine and some history with that bus. i see you have done alot over the past 20 years to get that thing back on the road.
wasn't that the bus that tim histand brought to that show? i know he showed up there one year with a BD deluxe, and the bus was even advertised in the back of hot vw's.
holberts was a really good show, and was one of the first ones i attended (back in 1986?). i even still have an original NEATO flyer that was left on my bus at that show. i need to find that.
i would go to holberts again if they put on a show. i am also planning on attending the Deutsche Classic, Mid Atlantic’s premier all German automotive event held in Reading, PA on Friday night July 7th and Saturday July 8th, 2006. Friday night Toy, Tool, Literature, Radios, Rarest of Rare (indoors). Saturday Swap Meet, Car Show, Events (outdoors in the park). |
