I was driving today in my 65 Beetle. We were at a stoplight and we started to go. I was getting ready to shift into 2nd when all of a sudden the engine revved up and i thought i heard a clunk. After thtat the car would not move no matter what gear i put it in. There was a kind of small grinding sound when i tried to go right after it happened and the car moved very slowly. But now it wont go anywhere and with the engine on I can shift freely through the gears without even using the clutch. Is this a clutch problem or a transmission. Yes i did a search but found nothing like this.

Yep. If the axle nut is not torqued to the proper 230ft/lbs then the iron axles will strip out the splines of that cast iron drum in a heartbeat.

OK that is what it turned out to be. But only on the right side.

It's usually just one side that goes. Make sure the opposite one is torqued properly.

Check the splines on the axle as well. My wife had a 68? T3 fastback when we got married that threw them on the drivers side all the time. They told us at the time they wanted 450 to replace the axle (1979). We sold the car...... Embarassed I want it back.

If you can shift gears without using the clutch it sounds to me like your shift coupler broke.Lift the back seat, remove the access cover and check the coupler.Sometimes you have to watch the coupler while someone shifts gears to be able to tell if its bad
