I would definately buy a set of mats for a black 58 cab.... and if I cant sell the 58 cardinal red coupe, I'll need mats for that one as well.

3 mat-matters...

1. Why does the tunnelmat has a ghianumber [143....] Or is it just those "early" ones with spec. ghia colors. The bug-ones should be exactly the same.

2. Have you noticed they painted the metal around the ventholes the same color as the bulkhead mat?

3. There are two types of "early" floor mats (in cars without footrest).
One kind that doesn´t have the bubbel pattern around the edges and one with. My 59 has flat edges.

Know this is anal.... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

There are minor differences in regards to the slots for the seat rails and the overall length of the tunnel mat. The Karmann-Ghia item is shorter.

Good catch! Most don't notice this, but you are correct.

Not a lot to contribute to this discussion other than:

1. Thanks to all for the great information about early ghia interiors.

2. I would definitely purchase a bulkhead mat if they become available.

Since the bulkhead mats were unobtainable when I started to get my interior together I purchased a complete german square weave carpet set from Lenny Copp. The carpet is very nice, but if I could get the correct interior mats I would prefer them.

FWIW, my application (aerosilver) requires a green mat, but I imagine that one could paint a neutral colored one: I think I read a post from someone who had done something similar to one of Mr. Lemke's excellent floor mats.

Man... I wish I hadn't spent the $$$ on the carpet! :-)

My mats can be spray painted. And I can make green mats for an extra fee.

I performed a test by painting a Wolfsburg West tunnel mat with cans of SEM "Color Coat," a flexible paint for vinyl and rubber products. http://www.sem.ws/product.php?product_id=190. Good product; I highly recommend it. Covered well, did not stink too bad, durable enough for my museum piece car.

I chose color "Monterey," a perfect match for the original mats in my Brilliant Red Coupe'. Other colors are available...

That is a 3-piece mat. I believe it is a one-year only configuration. (Do you know Retro? )

I do have a mold for that, and can repop it.

My customer will be in town to see the progress on the car in approx two weeks. I will show him what we are up against and let him determine just how far he wants to go with the mat reproduction.

I have found a great source for the heater channel mat. I'll work on posting pictures of the material we have sourced, it's pretty much spot on.

Yes, I do. Smile

It's correct from the July, 1955 pre-production cars (pictured in the 1955 press kits, Workshop Introduction brochures, and first Owner's Manuals, and cars shown at Georgsmarienhütte on July 14, 1955) through late April/Early May production in 1956 (chassis #1154228/body#3761), when the full rubber firewall cladding was introduced. Cool

Bonus: the corduroy materials arrived on the scene in January 1956 production, so that places the vintage of this car between January and May of 1956, but prior to March of '56 (#1128610/#3001) when the heater vents were moved towards the doors 270mm each.

So no, that mat configuration's technically not a full year's or even a Model Year's detail. Heh heh heh Twisted Evil

For those with rubber firewall cladding. In the case of every original car I myself can recall, confirmed.

I noticed this in my car easily, as the previous owner had removed the firewall cladding (tsk-tsk-tsk) and had folded it up for safekeeping (Oi!!! What WERE ya thinkin'?!), leaving the glue residue on the firewall and heater channel. There, the vents were neatly painted the olivey-green "beige" color, masked off in a neat rectangle. One can kind of see it here below:

1958 Graphite Silver Cabriolet.

Having removed the few parts of original rubber mats from the front bulkhead I found this piece of original black cloth material over the heater vents. Graphite Silver car, grey mats. Section of the original rubber can still be seen stuck to the heater channel.

I think I may need to change the floor pans!! Razz

1957 Cardinal Red Coupe.

Grey / Green mats, grey/green vents. You learn something new everyday. Next!!

ian

are the vents a different colour on the Graphite Silver Cab? or body colour?

there was that small loose piece of cloth with the mats i photographed - maybe a bit of heat protective material for the rubber mats? to ensure they didn´t dry out? Wink

Well the owner of the 58 ghia vert was in town today. We carefully studied all the pictures, submitted by everyone (thanks). His first reaction was you've got to be kidding there's no way.
As the day went on we decided that reproducing the mat as a single unit is out of the question. It could be done just no one will pay what it will cost to produce.
So we are going to make an effort to make the mat in sections/several pieces. I should have all the necessary material here by mid week, so I'll start posting pictures as the process takes place.
I have found a source for the heater channels/tunnel pebble grain mat that is fantastic. Pictures to follow.

bulkhead mats
what are the differences with 56/57/58/59 bulkhead mats?

my understanding is that the 57s/58s/59s are the same, full rubber matting
but the 56s - didnt they include a piece of carpet down low, covering the sill area/heat outlet section etc?

can we get some pictures posted up, showing all the different bulkhead mat details, help dougie out?

personally, i think the '57 & 58 & 59' bulkhead mat is the one to reproduce

it came in several different colours, at least:
'Grey' mats: Toucan Black Coupe, Cognac Coupe, Cardinal Red Coupe, Dolphin Blue Coupe
'Beige' mats: Brilliant Red Coupe, Graphite Silver Cab
    'Blue' mats: Bernina Cab tbc
'Green' mats: Aero Silver Coupe, Bambus Coupe

(PS is 'Bodenbelag' german for mats?)

maybe best to produce it in the grey or beige, then let owners paint them appropriately

sill/rocker mats
the sill mats would be simple, IMO

rockstock

my 58 brilliant red had grey matting not beige as you suggest!
