My blinker switch is wacky. When driving at night, when I signal, the headlights switch back and forth between high and lo beam about 43 times because the switch inside is shot (I assume). It also no longer auto-cancels.
What is conventional wisdom out there? Replace the whole thing or try and rebuild the one I have? Has anyone tried that? I did a search but there was no consensus on this issue.
Thanks! _________________ www.mainesaltwater.com |

i have rebuilt them before. it is very tricky to get it reassembled once you take it apart, there are tiny springs and ball bearings and brushes that make it work and these all want to escape and go "boioioing" all over the floor. it seems to take three or 4 hands to get the thing back together, but it is possible to take a non-working switch and make it work.
the only harm in trying to rebuild it is that you will break it or not be able to get it back together, and since it's already broken....
it might not be a bad idea to remove it and clean it with contact spray or brake cleaner, then spray some liquid grease into it after it is cleaned out. lots of guk gets into the inside and this can stop it from working. _________________ SL |

Thanks Scott. This became topical, not only because I have repeatedly high-beamed cops about 40 times in the last week, but also because someone has a brand new one for sale in the classifieds for $65, and now that I have your description I think I may make the leap and just replace it. Springs and ball bearings are my arch nemesis. _________________ www.mainesaltwater.com |
