|
|
Hi all,
I need to make or acquire a 3" body lift for this:
We have 3x3s, 35" rear tyres, Thing spindles and a 6" wider front beam... BUT
the steering box and damper now foul the fuel tank, and the extra lift over the front wheels (30" tyres) will be welcome anyway (its jacked higher than it really sits in the photo)
SO.... a body lift it must be. We need 3" to solve the clearance problems. I'm happy enough to use a lfit as there are some ancillary benefits for me - seats a bit higher (which I wanted) and I can deepen the dash a little to accomodate all the stuff I want in there
A 3" lift is difficult to get hold of in the UK, and expenseive to get shipped from the US, and since we'd have to adapt (i.e. shorten) it anyway, I had pretty much envisaged making the flat side pieces (I assume 3" x 1" box section ?)
The front and rear pieces seem a trickier proposition though...
Can anyone point me to a How To somewhere ? Or have any of you made your own and got any tips ?
If not, I guess I'll have to actually think about it !!
Thanks in anticipation... |

I just bought a 20 foot piece of 3" x 1.5" rectangular tubing when I did mine. You get it the way you want that way. Keep in mind it will change the angle of the steering shaft. If cutting a new hole for the steering shaft is not an option, you could always use some steering shaft u-joints to cure that problem. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.

Can you still get the T-mag products lift kit as featured in the Jeff Hibbard book. Had real nice cast pieces for front & rear.
Are they still trading? |

i don't think so. might find a set in a swap meet, but you'd probably have to fly to pomona, california. you might post a"want to buy" ad in the general parts section of the classified ads, maybe an old hippie has a set stashed in an old bus
probably you'll have to make one or have it made for you. _________________ blank |

Thats too funny. someone posts both mine and sux2bu's pictures, and were neighbors...thats why they look alike.
Its not really that hard, just have patience and some really good tools. Nice clean mild steel and the welds will be better. I used 1.5"x3" tubing and my neighber went 1.5x1.5.
If I had to do it over I would buy this new saw blade our body shop just got, I believe it's made by morse. Its fits into a 7 1/4" circular saw and let me tell you, it went through a truck frame like it was going into 1/4" plywood.
If you search the pictures that Ive posted there is a shot of what I did to over come the steering shaft angles.
Good luck and Cheers
BTW..I cant remember exactly, but I believe the steel only cost me like $40--it was all the cut off wheels and grinding wheels that was expensive _________________ dual purpose....more fun that way |

Here is a link to a pic of the steering shaft I made using super steering u-joints.
http://www.actiongrafix.net/images/steering.jpg
The one thing you cant see in the pic, is the standard bug column doesnt have a bearing in the bottom end of the column. So I went to the local parts store and picked up a sealed bearing and put it in the end. I wish I would have wrote down the part number. This bearing was not a direct fit, so a little fab work had to be done.
I think I spent about $55 on the steel to do the lift. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.
