I recently replaced the tamp sensors and thermostat in my van. The sensor that goes to the ecu is different from the ones described in some of the threads it is exactly the same as the temp 2 but has a black end. So i got everything cleaned up and put back together replenished the coolant, and was ready to start it up let it run the put some more coolant in. So i started it up and instantly the temp gauge shot through the roof it sucked down a little coolant but not as much as i lost. I am tired and don't know where to go from here any ideas or advice.

Is your fan cutting on?
My van was overheating because the resistor behind the driver headlight burned out, thus no fan cycling on. Just a thought.

I don't see why it would. The gauge immediately climbed.

Make sure you have all of the air out of the system. You need to burp it.
I think you have to raise the front end up about 12" to get all of the air out. Somebody here (with a water cooled van  ) would know. |

Get a friend to help you. Bleeding the coolant system takes 2 people.
The Bentley Manual describes the proper procedure for bleeding all the air out of the system.
You can probably find the proper method by doing an online search if you have no Bentley Manula available.

however, I disagree with this guys mention that the front of the vehicle does not need to be raised.

The blue sensor (plugs into thermostat housing at left side) is the Temp II sensor and supplies reading to the ECU. By the way, this sensor is Grey on a Syncro.
The black sensor (plugs into front of thermostat housing) sends reading to the instrument cluster.

Raise the front or back , as you wil .
I have done this many times without doing either .
Loosen front rad bleed screw and filler cap at rear .Fill until it runs out of front .
Tighten front bleeder screw .
Run engine and keep topping up the filler tank until you cannot get any more in .
Leave engine idling and check for leaks .
Top up some more if needed .
Keep an eye on the temp for the next 50 . 60 miles or so . Top up as needed. |
