Ideas on thiis latest project I have going.
I yanked and tossed a 1.9 water leaker engine. In goes a turbo A-2 diesel up against the automatic trans.
One issue remains. The starter motor.
I got the input shaft and bellhousing correct. Its the freaking starter motor. The flex plate wont fit on the diesel housing. An a-2 flex plate will fit but not the Vanagon starter....
Next step is trying to fabricate an A-2 automatic starter or trying to get the old gasser starter motor to work...
ideas? Cracks, Comments and Restraining Orders.... |

Hee. hee, hee......Just how fast do you think that TDI is gonna spin with that stock automatic???? There is hope, though, at fastforward.ca and I am pretty sure I am going for a new final drive ratio with my new gas engine when I get to it.
BTW: I am clueless about your starter problem, but I am sure someone will know about this. Did you contact some of the conversion places? Shouldn't be any different than any other I4 in an automatic van, I would think.
Keep having fun,
Walt.... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

actually the test van ran neck to neck with a stock 2.0 air cooled automatic
almost as if there was a pole holding them absolutely even
I am doing a 1.6 t for an in town runabout for my collection
my next project is a 3 CAT diesel into a 89 Carat automatic
THe final drive needs to be changed from the high 4.5's down to about 3.0 to handle a low rpm engine Pays to have a Kraut family member who can fabricate.....
Actually the van has been finished since early Fed, the freaking starter motor is the hassle,
Ever try and start one using a ROPE PULL? AND DON'T EVEN suggest a crank....I already am nursing a broken elbow and back from rolling a big rig last weekend!
Damn black ice and SUV's |

Hey! Did you get that red carat yet?
Ya know............no collection is complete without one.
btw....the suby conversion guys have to put in a bigger starter, but I 'spose you already know about that. |
