Split horn

i have the chance to buy a horn for a split but its 12 volt,how do i go about changin g it to 56 volt,anyone.

it looks just like a split horn.

You'll probably need to change out the diaphragm to handle a 12v load.

no it is the swirly type like splits have.nothing like that chrome one.

Actaully a "split" could have had any of three horns, the "mercedes sign", the swirl or the vertical slot one with the oval (not round) Bosch badge.

I believe that sometime in 1950 they went to the vertical slot type hron. Many '50and earlier pics, brochures, videos, etc, show the Mercedes type horn, some show the swirl horn.

As for voltage, the diaphragm has nothing to do with the voltage "load". The coil is wound for a particular voltage. With intermittent, normal use however, a 6 volt horn will survive 12 volts just fine, but it will have a higher pitch.

A horn is kind of a self-regulating device, higher voltage will result in a high magnetic filed being generated but the duty cycle (the amount of time the coil is energized vs. no energized) but not proportionally higher current (which could lead to overheating/burnout. Energize a coil on a 6 volt horn with out the diaphragm and contacts in place and it will pull about 22 amps. Properly tuned, assembled with diaphragm and contacts, and it will show about 4 amps on a DC ammeter (when in fact it is going to 22 amps, then to zero, then to 22, etc.) Run that same horn on 12 volts, and the DC ammeter will read about 5-6 amps.

I only know all that because I restore these horns and test them all the time.... and I'm a geeky engineer.....

Who knows what kind of Horn I should have on my 53? The one on my car now looks like it was either replaced or rebuilt.

It also has a very flat sound compared to other 6V bugs I've had. Any idea what might be wrong?

'53 should have the vertical slot horn with the oval badge. I restore these, although new or repro tags are not available for them. If you have a good tag keep it!.. With a contact clean and a tune, they really wail....

Clockwise from upper left: The "Mercedes" horn, the vertical slot horn with no badge (I think these were used on some stds, and the type2 "working buses"), the (rare) horn cover, the vertical slot horn with the badge (missing on that one, I'm looking for a nice one, anyone??), and the "swirl" horn.

The deal with the vertical slot ones Matt is always the badge, they didn't weather well. I might have an extra one, but no good badges. I see them from time to timeon eBay, they seem to go for $30-$65 or so, but even then, seldom with a good badge. They are nowhere near as rare as the Mercedes or swirl ones...
