Thanks John, Any idea on what the horn belongs too? I've tried doing research but no good results.

They are definitely getting pretty rare. I used to see them for sale in the $100-$150 range fairly frequently, but I don't remember the last time I saw one. I don't think I even saw one at Hessisch this last June. If you need one and something comes up, it is one of those parts you better grab no matter how much it is.

Rich, you might be able to use the back from a B 30 6. I have one here and from the back it looks nearly identical, I'm sure the cover would fit. Somewhere here there is a pic of the B 30, I don't think it was ever uses on VWs...

Thanks John! I'll have a look at the B 30

No idea. Somewhere in here someone has a scan of a Hella catalog that shows it, but I don't think it says for what car(s) it is for....

Here's a pic of the B 30, without the badge. I have since found one with the badge, don't have a pic handy...

That is the horn that came on my Oct '51 split. It was parked in '62 and not driven after that.

I have been lazy about getting my birth certificate but I am pretty sure it was a Hoffman split as it has a MPH speedo and cyclone air cleaner.

Hey guys,

I'm searching for the "right" horn for my split 1950 deluxe. What would you say - the swirl or the vertical slot one with the oval Bosch badge?

Thanks for your help!

Best regards
Chris

For example this Hella B30, which is actually for sale (not listed yet). Restored, and made in 1952.

Hella being an OEM supplier to many auto manufacturers, B30 style of horn was also standard equipment on the 1961-65 Amphicar Model 770.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but there's a lot of great info in here.

Does anybody know, will the front of my Swirl horn fit on the back of a "Mercedes symbol" horn like this one?

Here's my horn:

And the inside, heavily corroded and not working

In this picture the Swirl horn looks bigger than the Mercedes horn, so I'm guessing they're not compatible

I think it will. Both are Hella IIRC. Make sure when re-assembling that the diaphragm/core plate is oriented correctly.

When i was restoring my 47 Split i bought my re-pop horn from repuestossam.com. Took awhile to get it, (lots of emails) but just could not find a good original horn. He makes them in both 6V and 12V.

Thanks Johnshenry for the badges link, i had not heard that in years and was laughing my ass off Smile

I'm wondering, is a Swirl horn too early for my '52, or were they still used then? Most of the references I see for them seem to be on earlier cars...
