Here's its current ride height (taken after the bumpstops were removed)
Doesn't look low enoguh to be sitting on bumpstops does it? |
Not sure if it is related or not.....but it looks like you have Type 1 rims on the car now. The hubcap is recessed in the wheel much more than on the original pictures, indicating a much smaller (Type 1-like) offset. Maybe the jarring you feel is the tire hitting the fender in the front when you hit a bump with the wheel turned some. _________________ Later,

No, It isn't the wheels.. i am having some rubbing issues.. but i know about it (i.e noise) when it happens.. widened stock wheels are hard enough to get around here in a beetle offset let alone a type 3 one.. it would be nice to have a proper offset though!
Plus it was still riding that rough with the old (stock) wheels. |

Josie, sorry it took so long to get back with you on this- it's been a hectic weekend!
I've taken pics of both my '66 Type 34 Ghia and my '73 Squareback (Variant). Unfortunately, I think you may need to change your title from "problem solved" to "problem verified".
The pic of the '73 is with the right front wheel on the ground, petrol tank filled. You will notice that the upper bump stop is almost touching, but the lower one has LOTS of space between the stop and the lower trailing arm.
I just included the pic of the '66 that is up on jackstands to show that your front bump stops as pictured were indeed correct.
I went in your Gallery and studied the pics of your Notch, and it seems like the "stance" changes quite a bit from one picture to another. I don't think the car is lowered, and I don't think the difference in stance is entirely optical due to wider tyres and different rims.
I think you have some torsion bar weakness in the front beam.
That said, I don't believe that this is something that is going to snap and cause you to go out of control, as I've never seen that happen. But, you need to be aware of it, and start making plans to get it fixed, because you're going to start noticing some tyre wear issues. Additionally, you don't want to inadvertantly rip up a fender whilst turning and going over a bump in the road.
See if you can find a good front- end repair specialist with some solid Volkswagen experience, and ask about having the torsion bars re- tempered. You may have to nose around for some good used ones. i have some here, but I'm sure shipping these things to Australia will be out of this world expensive.
I would not just remove the front stops and call it "good" in this case. I think you're asking for trouble down the line.
This is what the trailing arms and bump stops SHOULD look like on a car on the ground with a full tank:
And, here's the front lower stops on the '66:

Again, I don't want to unduly alarm you, but you should get it looked into. Or, if you want to try tackling it yourself, get some verified good used torsion springs for a Type 3 and we'll walk you through it. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

blasphemy!
Mine is lowered and does not bottom out on everything... Rides pretty well actually. You just have to be more careful of course. I have not hacked off the bump stops either, but its been recommended by quite a few people to improve my ride more. (clarify, bumpstops are removed, mounts are not hacked off). Yours is definately lowered in the front, possibly accidently by a mechanic or a PO, or something in the front is giving. I know torsions can weaken but id be surprised that much, but tram has seen it all, if he says so, its possible. [/img] _________________ * ---www.volksblast.com--- *

Buggin, NOBODY has seen it all! I'm just going by pictures in her Gallery. This is NOT LOWERED:
Josie also said that the car rode better when she got it two years ago, about the time that photo was snapped, and that nobody had ever messed with the ride height. That can ONLY lead one to surmise that the torsion bars are sagging. As these cars age, stuff that has never gone wrong before will start going wrong, because mechanical things wear out.
I personally don't agree with lowering Type 3s, but that's a sweet lookin' Square, and one of the BEST colours, too! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Swap the upper and lower bumpers on each side. The upper one is smaller, and you will still have a bumper in place. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
