2 questions really, but intertwined (so, 3).
1: sumps and pressure... does a small sump effect crancase pressure one way or another?
2: other ways to reduce cranckase pressure... vented valve covers? more breathing? i have a OG 356C breather vented to the carbs -- no downdraft tube, which might be a good add... (engine = mild-1776)
3: thoughts on sumps... i'm looking for a small, low-profile sump (1.5 - 2 quarts). thoughts on good ones? the wide-glide sump with filter was looking good: http://cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=198 ... anyone else other than empi, CB and GBE? especially if they could use the stock drain plate. oldschool styling would be cool (but they're fairly unchanged through the years, no?) |

Hmmm...your engine looks familiar. Was your car at Volks Authority when Ray's shop was open before he closed shop? _________________ Jim Kikuchi

yep. ray built the motor. since then, i've had to swap to a larger genny (38amp GR17) after burning up five 25amp 356 ones (ouch). the switch to a 12V stand necessitated a new porsche breather (different angle and offset). the new breather does not have a downdraft tube, which might be adding to the oil leak woes -- but does have a larger carb breather line (might have to add the downdraft tube, but would rather not if i could avoid it). additional oil, especially with more filtration might be nice, too. |

There are several old-school sumps 4-sale. They all used the same mold, but changed the logo. DDS & Race Trim etc... all used the same mold. These sell for about $40-$50 without a logo. I believe Dave Mayes (Oregon) has a pair available for $75/pr And they use the oem sump plate. Otherwise, Berg would be the only sump I'd consider.
