i'm new to the type 3 thing i have a 72 squareback i really want to fix it up but every time i start working on it i remeber the whole top of the car has about a 1/4 inch of bondo on it i can't figure out what this is from. there appers to be no damage to the body that i can see. so i am thinking of cutting the top off putting a cage in it and making it into a baja type 3.
has anybody ever seen this done. thanks jesse. |

Since it ain't an early squareback I would baja it
I saw another pic here on the samba awhile ago it was done alot better.
Heres a truck with a rollbar that would be cool |

We're gonna need a little more info.
Yes, baja has been done but they're typically crappily done. Also, if you plan on actually using it off road then you're further screwed because body panels aren't reproduced so any damage is gonna be costly. Stick to the ubiquitous Bug for true off-roading, parts are MUCH easier to come by. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

Here's one that was for sale on theSamba a while back:
And one I found in Oregon several years ago:
Back in the mid to late 80's there was a 3 inch Type 3 lift available from many vendors. I've got an NOS one that I will eventually put on one of my cars. _________________

I say "roadster" that bitch. Cut the top off, sand it to bare metal, bag it, etc. _________________ OGST

The problem with 3x3 trailing arms on a Type 3 is the fender or edge of the fender well is in the way.
On a bug, with most of the back cut off, there is unlimited room to push the wheels back and out. On a Type 3, unless you take the rear fenders off or reconfigure a lot, then your wheels will hit the body or fender when the suspension is rotating. _________________ Phillip Bradfield

If you cut the top off, you'll want a full cage in a baja'd Type 3. No way the windshield frame will support the car in a roll over. _________________ Phillip Bradfield

when he says to roadster it, he means dont make it a baja, cut the roof off, put air ride on it, run bare metal, and cruise, like this car
