glued mine
70mph with big wind = no flop |
Makes 'em a tad difficult to adjust though...
I glued one of mine on a trip because I was sick of it flopping constantly, but then it was unusable for my wife. The power mirrors OTOH don't have any issues. The mirror portion is not subject to the wind at all. Pricey way to go, but sometimes you just get fed up |
Im in the same boat (sick of the floppy mirrors)
Mirror adjustment Not really a issue
Im the only driver and I dont tend to adjust the mirrors once they are set
After the frustration of multiple attempts to fix this problem I gave up and went with the glued (adhesive) arms |

If I were the only driver, I'd have done the same thing. I even found a driver's door NOS VW mirror still on the shrink wrap card - better, but still the same friggin thing. That's when I gave up on 'em for good. _________________ '86 Westy FAS GenV Turbo (Marvin) |

Yeah, I went so far as to drill the base and use a roll pin to fix the mirror position but I also need the adjustment option of multiple drivers.
The is the eBay listing for the Land Rover mirrors:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Volkswagen-Type-2-T3-Vana...SwUO9bjqc4
I have only driven at about 65 mph thus far and that was without brutal wind gusts and cross winds.
Next month I will drive thru the Alogdones dunes at 70-75 mph and probable wind gusts -- I am hopeful the mirrors will hold their setting. |

Looks like a nice alternative. They look like they stick out away from the side of the van quite a bit more than stock. Is that the case, or just an optical illusion? _________________ '86 Westy FAS GenV Turbo (Marvin) |

They're about the same size. I think there's a bit of optical illusion going on here. The LR arm looks much longer because the LR mirror arm mounts in the middle of the mirror, while the VW arm is attached at the edge.
They also fold forward or back flush to the side of the van via spring loaded detents. After 10k miles, I'm very happy with mine:
2 - side by side
1 - field of view
5 - fully folded _________________ 1982 Vanagon Westfalia -- 1.9 TD AAZ-like |

For the Land Rover mirrors, there's an Allen head screw on one side of the ball socket on the underside of the mirror that can be tightened to make the mirror adjustment/movement firmer. After the initial adjustment, I have tightened up mine just once in the last 10k miles. _________________ 1982 Vanagon Westfalia -- 1.9 TD AAZ-like |

Thanks for that tip Magritte. I will carry a suitable wrench in case an on the road adjustment is called for. |

Tried rubber gasket which worked for a while but now it looks like the stud is pulling out of the mirror. Any easy fixes on this or time to get a new mirror?
Thanks ya'll! |

Do yourself a favor and get the Land Rover mirrors. They are so much better than the stock ones, and no more floppy mirror.
I bought the brackets from Vanguy, very happy to support a small business.

Mirrors you can find on ebay or anywhere that carries them.
Part number is MTC5217. |
