Its an 86 Westy Weekender and the roof came from Just Kamoers in the UK. Its the right roof according to the invoice and the label on the box, but it seems to be anout 10-20cms too small!

i had a similar problem to this. mine was at least 3 inches short! luckily i have a lot of experiance in stretching canvas as i am in art school
what i did was get help from my dad. he screwed the bracket thing on while i pulled the canvas tight. another pointer (i know you dont want to hear this) is to start over. start from the front center and work your way all the way around one screw at a time. each time pull the canvas as tight as you possibly can before screwing it in place. this will wear you out after a couple of hours, but it is certianly worth it when you have a nice taught canvas. after you get done, spray it with water and let it dry in the sun to get the wrinkles out. _________________ Champagne Edition Roadtrip monster "Juakali"

Heat from steam helps too, just like the pros do. I am dreading doing mine, but someday I must. Your directions should help. Everybody needs to know such tricks. For some reason, the Vanagon stuff is not so well documented like others.
Well back to my brake upgrading.... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Are you trying to put it on with the top all the way up?
That's the biggest mistake.......
Put something like a chair on the upper bunk. |

Thanks for all your input. Levi, we started by getting the front top all lined up and screwed in. then we started on the sides. as we got to the back we found we had lost about 10cms!
Our plan is to undo the sides and try to locate the middle of the rear and then try again![/url] |

OK-hopefully problem solved. We tried again to reinstall the top on Sunday, and couldnt make the corners of the canvas stretch to where they needed to go.
Popped back over to the supplier, and behold! The canvas was too small! Have now been supplied with one that seems to be the right size, and we're now going to try and install during the evenings this week.
And we thought we were going mad!! |
