SHOW me a passenger tire in the CORRECT 185R14 size that has a max load weight rating of 1540 lbs. minmum!
The CORRECT 185R14 tire is either a reinforced sidewall OR a 185R14C. The C means Commercial.
ANY PASSENGER tire you put on a bus MUST have the max load weight divided by 110%. THAT is FEDERAL LAW!!!!
So you have your spiiffy Maypop brand of Pmetric passenger tires that are max rated on the sidewall of 1300 lbs. Already they are 240 lbs below minimum. Now divide that 1300 by 1.10.... bet you feel good at 1182 lbs.?? But wait..... you can only load that tire to a max of 94%.
WOW, that is now 1111 lbs. max weight you can put on that tire. Feel safe now??
If you can't dazzle them with brillance, then buffalo them with bullshit. |
Jeeze, Karl, a little strident are we? Dazzling caps and exclamations does not change the reality for many of us that we have enough experience to select appropriate tires for our cars. I use passenger car tires on my bus, they beat your 110%!!!! FEDERAL LAW!! and they are INCORRECT! (who cares?) 205-75-14s made by Michelin. I feel safe and I have done the math. Every other car in my driveway weighes more than my bus, and the GVWR of the bus exceeds the BMWs by only 70 lbs.
That said, it is the responsibility of a bus pilot to know how much his bus weighes at both axles, his tire ratings and current condition, and current inflation pressures. That is just common sense. I have seen some pathetic little beat up tires on buses and bring it to the attention of the owners. But I am not a jack-boot knee-jerk tire hysteric, I appreciate the fact that some of us here may have to get only what we can afford.

My 1992 Jaguar has a GVW is 4960 lbs the GVW of my 1971 Dual Cab w/tarpaulin is 4982 but the unladen weight of the pickup is 2777 and the unladen weight of my 1992 Jaguar is 4560 so what gives do I need reinforced sidewall tires or commercial tires on my Jag? Oh yes and the Jag will go 100 miles per hour faster than the pickup _________________ 71 Pickup 190 HP 911 S engine |

If anyone on the west coast wants some decent tires and doesn't want to argue about it (hee hee hee), head to Les Schwab. They stock a 185R14 tire with a more than suitable load range. The guy behind the counter told me that they keep them handy for all those folks running around in their gay little toyota motorhomes.
I put a set on my vanagon and they perform great. I believe the brand is Jupiter. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

I don't know. Many earlier heavy cars spec'ed a reinforced tire also. I know that Volvos and Lincolns did. What does your owners manual say?
Even if it doesn't specify a reinforced tire, you shouldn't play tire engineer either. Jaguar= low and flat. The body doesn't lean much, so the weight of the vehicle remains spread out among the four tires (relatively speaking). Bus= tall and narrow with high COG. Busses often put most of their weight on two tires (as when you are cornering) or one tire (as when you are cornering and also hitting the brakes).

I think some of the T100's ran those (or 195R14 Commercial) also. And those weird post office vehicles run either 185R14 or 195R14 Commercial. They often have a source for generic tires for cheap. Just ask your mailman or femailman.

I have several thousand on them so far and have been pleased with them. I also have some friends that run them on their bays. They made a world of difference over the michelins that were on there when I bought it. I'll get the specs off of the tire. Seems like they were close to about 400 bucks for the set once they got mounted and balanced and stems........etc. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

I had a set of the Jupiters on my 71 not too long ago. Korean tire, and I think they were like $65/tire... _________________ 1971 Westfalia -- Daily Driver |

I think there should be a poll up in this thread with the most popular tire brands for folks to vote.
I bought the Hankook RA30s and love them! _________________ Lenny

Yup, I meant the RA08. I am usually good with numbers but someone I let a 30 run out the 08.

I am really happy with these tires, especially at the price. _________________ Lenny

Has anyone had any luck buying the Hankook RA08 tires locally? Everywhere I call no one carries them and I can't even order them. Is my only option Bus Depot for the Hankook's??? |
Don't know if you have a Discount Tire Co., but I'll be ordering mine from them down here. $66 a pop, no shipping charges _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben

If you ask for a C rated tire, you will get a passenger tire! NO C rated passenger tire comes anywhere near the minimum Max Load Weight of 1540 lbs. Zilch, Nada, None. No matter how you add or subtract or divide or multiply. There is no such thing as new math when it comes to tires.
You need to ask for a 185R14 C. That C on the end means Commercial.
The pic above is a Michelin Agilis 81 tire. It is a M&S tire. The Vanco 8 is not. The RA08 is all-season.
The reinforced sidewall tires are out of stock. The last ones that I know of was the Continental CS-21. Michelin MX has been out of production for close to 5 years now ;(
Not sure what rating the Jupiter has. People say "I bought 'em and I am happy" but they never post the sidewall specs....... |

Kleiber made the identical tire as the Michelin ZXZ reinforced for less $$ but they are history also.
I found a couple of brand new spares on Vanagons. Real nice tires.
Both Continentals. Both 771 series. The RS is a 185R14C. The TS is a 185R14 reinforced sidewall. 771 does not show up on any USA Continental website.......

My 1973 bus manual doesn't show any of those tire sizes, so the local tire shop wants some type of proof of where this information is coming from.
It simply states "...buy replacement tires that show the same specifications with regard to size, load, carrying capacity, tread pattern, etc."
That doesn't do me any good in proving to these guys what originally came on the vehicle. _________________ 1963 Anthracite Beetle 1776 w/ 34pict
