The bus is 1 of 4 ACVW I have to maintain tires and such on. Process of getting a 65 Split back on the road. That's a little more than I'm looking to spend on wheels, but thanks! |

Well, I decided to go with the Ranger Thunderer R101. It is 185R14 and says it's a light truck tire.
My review... I can't tell the difference between these and the white walls I had before. LOL I have only driven it around town though and my white walls were rated for 1400lbs. So a real review will come after I have driven it to Arcata and back in a week.
|
Ok, I'm a little late for my review as I got back from the trip a few weeks ago. LOL, but I really don't have much to report. I really can't tell to much of a difference. I guess they do a bit better in wind, both natural wind and truck wind. I don't notice getting pushed around as much when the trucks pass me. Other then that I can't really tell to much difference as far as road feel or steering and such. Maybe I'm just not bothered by this stuff that a lot claim to feel with the 'non rated' tires? I'm sure they have to be a bit safer though as the side wall is 8 ply instead of 4.
Sorry, not much help in anyone else's decision making. LOL _________________ Kim

I also have started driving around on the Ranger Thunderer R101 now that the Crusty Pig is now road legal. They are definitely stiff, I adjusted the tire pressure down to 26 in the front & it now rides decently. I've only got about 200 miles on them, I'll report as they wear.

This may be a dumb question, but: Why is the Tire Sticky floating around in the general threads, and not sticking up top with the actual Stickies? |

Aren't they supposed to be 65psi? That's a bit low for a tire like that, isn't it?
I put my Hankook Vantra's at 55 and thought it might be a tad low.

The comfort and payload rating for the front tires are going to vary greatly compared to what is suggested in the owner’s manual versus the inflating numbers on a new 8-ply radial tire. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Sweet jeezus! that thing must ride like it's rolling on discarded mill stones. That's what the tires are rated at for full load, the weight of the vehicle is far less than the tires are rated for. The tire pressure on the fronts of a bus, by VWs recommendation is 28PSI, the side walls are pretty stiff on these tires so I adjusted them down a bit (They were at 40.). _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I found these tires on Walmart.com. They seem to meet spec. But they look too cheap to be good. What's the catch? |
No catch. They're most likely fine for our needs. After all, these buses are not Miatas on the SCCA circuit. If that is what your wallet will currently allow, I say "go for it!".
(Commercial tires don't carry the high Customs duties that passenger tires have. In Asia, many cargo vans just happen to use the same size that we use.) |

The Antares Grip 20 tire is an affordable winter tire with hundreds of biting edges in the circumferential center ribs and in the shoulder blocks. This tread pattern will provide grip on ice thanks to these sipes, while the open shoulder allows slush and snow to evacuate the tread area for traction in deep snow and slush. A really well balanced winter tire for the money. |

I don't know how often this deal comes along, but if anyone is on the fence about the General Grabber AT2s, General has a $70 mail in rebate until the end of this month.
http://generaltire.com/promotions
Just putting that out there for anyone that is looking at the Grabber AT2. I might just have to pick them up. _________________ 1970 Westfalia with a late Sportsmobile top |
