I have been led to believe that the 5 speed is a direct bolt in, however you need ALL the 5 speed parts, linkage gear shifter, bushings etc.
I have the Weedle catalogue and they offer all the parts. They list 3 or 4 different 5 speeds, the R&P is different. They also offer a taller 5 as an option. I think the price range was 1700 to 2300 for the tranny, about 300$ more for the optional taller gear.
Tomorrow I will post the ratios they have as off the shelf.

The shifter handle and box should be all that is different. The trans case and shifter part is the same as an 091/1 4 speed (83-up).
None of this applies to air cooled and 82 diesels. They are completely different. They had to move the engine rearward 2" to get room for the 5 speed in 83.
If someone needs pics of the shift linkage, I have one I can send pics of.

First of all, to br friendly to dial-up folk like me, it would be nice if you'd reduce the picture size... something no more than 100k would be nice Smile

After that, you look at the top of this page to where it says "Gallery". Then click on "add photo". After that it is pretty obvious. Select the picture you want to upload from your computer, give it a title and description for the samba, tell it to load it to the vanagon/eurovan forum, and boom... it is loaded.

After that, if you click on the gallery picture you just loaded (it'll be a little thumbnail on the left), you can right click it (assuming you have a PC) and copy picture address/url. Use the little (img) button at the top of your "post a reply" dialogue box and paste in in the link between [..img] and [../img] (except without the .. ).

That should do it!

So, what is the shift pattern? If reverse becomes 1st, is second straight down or right and down? Where is reverse?

You got it wrong... Reverse is below first. The shift pattern is like this:

R-2-4
1-3-5

And yes, it is weird to drive.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Not wierd at all if you've driven early 911's with 901 and type 911 gearboxes.
Many people liked them best, because, once you'd made the 1-2 shift, all gears were within the pattern. IOW, a road racing transmission, not a 4 speed with overdrive. Perhaps not quite as good in stop and go city traffic.
I now have a later 911 with 915 gearbox and often find myself trying to put it into reverse at 125mph after teaching some snottty nosed asian car driver a lesson. (Still crazy after all these years!) (And that big tailpipe alone is not enough!) I'm not foolish enough to take on WRX's!

Reverse is being a bear in my current R to 4, and I really need that 5th gear. Where can I get a bolt in variety?

Thanks!!!

I looked through their website (for at least a minute or two, whew!) and was unable to find this. Can you post a link to the kit and other 5th gear info?

What would be pros/cons of this vs going with the Suby 5sp? I've been really wanting a 5sp and had thought a Subaru tranny was my only option. Can these transmissions handle decent HP or are they delicate like our stock 4 speeds?

This VW 5 speed that Weddle is selling is as strong as the VW 4 speed. Same beef up parts fit in the 5 speed as the 4 speed. Same Differentials available.(Locker, TBD, LSD).
Advantages over the flipped Subaru.
Bolts in to same van as the late side shift case 4 speeds. 83.5+
VW Shifter bolts up. (Is there a shifter avail for the Subaru)
All the forward Gears and Ring and Pinion are NOS VW new parts. (except 5th which is a New Weddle gear) Zero Mile parts. Not 180k+ like most vans.

How is a Subie 5 speed going to work? Somebody will have to change the ring gear to the other side or you will have 5 speeds in reverse.
And the 091/1 is delicate? Perhaps not up to a extremely boosted diesel, but hardly delicate. Early ones up to mid 1988 had a known weakness, but most are past that by now.
And the good thing is.... they fit.

If you read the link that I posted above you will see that the front shift rod, shifter, shift box and some other parts are needed to make the 5 speed complete. Those parts aren't very easy to get ahold of.
The subaru 5 speed drives differently than a VW 5 speed in the videos that I have seen. With a engine conversion it drives much more car like.

I have an '89 Westy, 5 speed TDI. (imported from Germany) It's great. 5th speed is pretty good for cruising highways at approx 100 km/h, even with stock 14 inch tires.

The Three 5 speed kits I have done recently were installed into late vanagons that were 4 speed vans. two were a bolt in deal NO mods. The third needed the shifter adjusted, after he called and I went thru how to adjust the shifter he has been happy since. All installs were done by the customer. Using the stock shifter does require pushing down as if to go to reverse to get into first. Like a Early Porsche 901 trans. So as I see it the 5 speed euro shifter is an option not a necessity. Wink

The Subaru trans does drive more like a car as it has a taller first gear and ring and pinion. That might work good in my lighter van and on the road. The VW trans has a lower first gear ratio and ring and pinion giving it the lower offroad capable first so I can get to my out of the way camping spot. Wink

If you don't need to push the shifter down to shift into first then you have the possibility of misshifting into 1st while looking for 3rd. It can be done but it isn't a ideal solution as members have mentioned before.

I should have mentioned that in 2003 the PO of my van spent thousands of dollars importing a 5 speed from the motherland then having WEDDLE rebuild it with new parts with all new 5 speed shift components so I know exactly what is good or bad about a legit VW 5 speed.
