well i drove to phoenix to assist in the assembly of my new engine this past week and all i can say is that the end project was better then me and the builder thought it would be. the engine is for the wife's 71 superbeetle and once it is in the car her vw driving experience is really gonna change. now for some stats.
new as41 crase set up for full flow
69mm counter weighted crank
13lb flywheel
slr xv260 cam with 112 lobe centers, .418 lift (when assembled and measured came out to .420)
stock vw 1.1 rockers with swivel feet adjusters (might put 1.4s in, in the future)
new slr lifters
stock vw heads with an awesome port job, heads flow at 127.45 cfm intake and 110.77 cfm exhuast and 7.6:1 cr
85.5 new cima/mahle pistons and cylinders, balanced.
rebuilt and balanced stock vw rods
GB oil pump and pump cover
40mm kadrons with 130 main jets and 55 idle jets on short manifolds, also match ported to the heads.
csp linkage
GB 1.5 quart oil sump
S&S 1 3/8 header with single quite pack (might put a 1 1/2 on in the future)
stock german doghouse and engine tin (even got my hands on a hoover bit )
now for some dyno numbers.
peak torque: 82.8 lb-ft @ 3900
peak hp: 70.8 bhp @ 5000
of course since the location of the dyno is alot higher in elevation the numbers should be slightly more where im at closer to sea level. and the torque curve is awesome, making 80.2 lbs-ft at 2200 rpm dropping off to 77.5 lbs-ft at 4900 rpm and 64.5lbs-ft at 5500 rpm.
also for the fun of it we ran the engine on the dyno with no fan belt, with no other changes.
peak torque: 93.7 lbs-ft @ 3900
peak hp: 85.6 bhp @ 5100
the engine has a really nice sound to it. just got to get some oil lines fabed up and throw the beast into the wifes car, which hopefully will be this weekend. i will post perodic updates as to the performance and driving experience of this small engine.
the builder is steve hollingsworth of vw performance in phoenix az. he also hand ported the heads and did the blueprinting and balancing of the engine. |

Sounds like a great engine. How much ($) did ya end up with in it?

seeing as how i am related to the builder, my cost vs an average customer is greatly different. basically i just paid for parts and a few other things. |

Ahh, the name of the builder says it all. I visited Steve back in '98, I think, when he still had his shop in San Jose. I could sure have used some of his expertise and advice on VW engines since then, as most of mine don't last beyond 1500miles. Last saw Steve (with Deena) out here in NJ last May when I met them on their "Herbie Across America" drive at their hotel.
Wishing you lots of lasting fun with that engine! |

Sounds like an awesome combination!
Did Steve do the heads? Those are some great numbers for a stock valved head. Any pics of them before assembly?

Out of lack of funds to repair my race motor one summer. I was motivated to not be "down" the rest of the summer to build what I could out of what I had laying around....
1600cc's of race motor...
Stock ported heads as much as I could do w/o welding. Flycut (because I could do it at work for free) .120", then chambers totally re-shaped for flow. HD springs and other HI rpm stuff with a used W-125 cam and a set of 44 IDF's.
That motor ripped... It was super soggy down low. It could barley pull hills, but once it hit 4,000rpm it was like a light switch and made enough power to run 15.30's.
I was off racing again for less than $100...
Later that motor went to 1755cc's and ran High 14's. |

it would be sweet if there could be an official competion were participants
were given a stock 1600 turnkey, 4 grand or so and two weeks to build the
most powerful motor without a turbo, bottles, or race gas. or something
simular. what rules would you set? maybe the top 3 motors could have
an endurance test to decide the overall winner with a brutal dyno session
just a thought |

Roland, are you flying out for the Kelley Park weekend?
Steve H. will be here for that weekend...doing tune-ups on some of his customers cars (not mine though). _________________ Jim Kikuchi

Hi, Jim! No, not this year. "Maybe" Solvang, though in September! I have to concentrate on getting one of my engines working reliably for the Berg 10th Anniversary Tour to Michigan all thru April. Wishing you and Steve a great time at KP! |
