I am restoring a 59 Kombi to use as a daily driver, It is still 6 volt with a split case tranny and a 40 bastard. I have a big nut transmission that is 12v with reduction boxes (so I can stay stock heighth). I plan on running a 1600. single or dual
My question is do I need a adapter plate to mount the transmission to the frame and engine? If so where do I get one? Also is this going to be worth the effort?
Thanks for any info or help -Dusty

You'll need the nosecone adapter. I believe you can get it from Busboys. I'm sure there are other makers of the adapter out there too.

The rest will interchange just fine.

The way the front of you transmission mount is made fits a crashbox trans which is totally different from the full synchro you want to put in. Ergo, you need the adapter mount.

You will need to shorten the park brake cables too.

Hi Volks,
Definitely! Check the yellow pages for "Wire Rope" supplier. They should have or can get proper sized swedged ends for the front of the cables. Then you cut the cables just short enough and have the new ends swedged on at the shop.

Hi DustyTires,
Do the RGBs yourself and with that experience you can repair them later with ease. Even out on the road as we have had to do!

I know there are many threads on this topic, but finding the best ones depends on the search terms used and I've sometimes forgotten what terms I previouly used to get at some of the better threads.

In any event, I may be putting a big nut into a '59 (VIN#473896)

Is this all I need?

What about the nose cone and hockey stick? Does the big nut nose cone and hockey stick just mount to this adapter?

See this one too: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=222339

E-brake cables are also another dynamic.

And another nosecone adapter option: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1318980

EDIT: Given the chassis #, I can't remember if the nosecone adapter is needed. I know my April '59 would need one, if the mounting point wasn't already modified with a latter mount. Food for thought. But the cabling will more than likely needed modification in a '59 for a big nut mamajama.

Would also depend on if your bus was built for split case or tunnel. MAY59 was the switch over between those.

Exactly. Progressive Refinements calls out 19 May 1959, starting at Chassis #469 447, so you might not need the nosecone adapter for going from split-case to tunnel trans, but I believe there will be some modifications required to the length of the e-brake cables. Good luck!

Appreciate those responses. And yes, I did pick up on those brake cable threads that indicate 123.5 inches which I understand to be the later cables shortend. I'm asking about the mount because I bought the bus in this thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=180

On page 10 of the thread you can see where some prior owner of the tranny ground the bell housing a bit too much and got into the starter bushing cavity.

The seller went to this (small nut) trans because the big nut trans he had seemed to be a Frankenstinien hodge podge of adaptions that wasn't working.(He explains some of the details in the thread).

I've been saving a '66 big nut drum to drum core for just this opportunity. I had a small nut 59 in the past with stock 36er and its not conducive to a freeway on-ramp.

Since my VIN # is after that cut off, I'm hopeful I only have to deal with the cables. I'm going up to trailer it home tomorrow, so I'll know more then.

Something to keep in mind if you end up having to use the adapter is the wolfgang part scoots the trany back ever so much and has been known to create a toe in issue. The lolly pop from Wagens West does not cause this. I used the wolfgang one back in the day and it did the job on lowered buses but I have made a point to use the lolly pop on stock buses.

Appreciate that insight. I'll post a pic of what's there when I get it back down to Ohio.

I have used the wagenswest lollipop, the concept1 adapter and the Wolfgang as well as hard mount. The best option is the wagenswest lollipop. It is the only one in my experience that does not create a toe-in situation and fit is good.

I thought the Bastard 40 and the Fully Synchronized Tranny came out at the same time? Odd to have a Bastard on a split tranny?
