Prior to '58 or so, did they put the rear brake backing plates on upside down? That is, the wheel cylinder is on the bottom and the entrance for the e brake cable is on the top with the cable comming in from the REAR of the car? Longer steel lines to bend around the axle and reach the wheel cyl. Sure looks odd that way.
Seems the 56 and 57 cars I have here are like this and the 58 and 59's are "normal", at least what I'm used to seeing. Or were the po's of 2 different cars from 700 miles apart just on drugs? |

No drugs involved, my 57 has the exact same setup.

Guess I should've checked here before I started messin' with it. Easy enough to put back though.
But what a goofy setup - wheel cylinder and bleeder valve on the bottom, brake cable going in backwards on the top, steel lines all wiggled around, just hangin' there.
Sure looks funny... |

You would think that air would be easier to expell from the system if the wheel cylinders were at the higher point.
I guess like everything else, they had their reasons.

Yeah, reasons why they changed things.

The change in brakes co-incided with a change in wheel cylinder design and size of brakes... the same equipment change as between Oval Window Beetles and the newer "Square Window" 1958's. On the Karmann-Ghias, the changeover date was September 23, 1957. My KG was built on that exact date and had the earlier style of brakes... mine must have been put together early in the day! _________________ David Ruby

Just for future reference, for others reading this down the line and for myself when I forget this detail; the early style e brake cables are longer that the later ones, to acomodate the trip around the top of the axles. Since the PO of this car replaced the cables with the later style and I don't have any spares to put the right ones back on, the car is getting the backing plates installed "right side up". I'm calling it a period upgrade. |
